The beloved Rat and Parrot is the best-known pub in Grahamstown. We serve amazing food, from juicy steaks to scrumptious pizza, and of course, the coldest beer in town. A place of many special memories and exciting new beginnings.
The pub is large and if sport is your thing there are screens everywhere. But it also serves great beer and very good steak. Pizzas were ok. They have a large wood fired oven. But Iâve had better. Crusts are thin and crispy but too much rubbery cheese for me and itâs not fresh mozzarella which might be rather harsh given where we are! Great service though. Really friendly people and efficient too. The steak was amongst the best Iâve had.

Superb wide menu and good service , specialities of pastas, lasagne , calamari, prawns.Gnocci , camembert. And springrolls.for starters.Nice range of salads and a cheese board.licenced for great wines and other drinks and a kiddies menu. Many burger choices on the menu , as well as chicken, seafood and grill. Also steaks and pork dishes.Check menu online. My only gripe is that they have plastic chairs and trestle tables which cheapens the expensive food items, but thats just me.

On a recent visit to Grahamstown we were looking for somewhere different to eat when we chanced upon The Rustic Route. The vibe was excellent, with a muso playing great stuff to ad to the atmosphere. We initially sat and ate in one of the side rooms, but soon gravitated outside with a bottle of good wine to listen to the music and just chill. Staff were really friendly - especially the student behind the bar who serves the waiters. Felt sorry for him, as the waiters get tipped by the patrons and the poor barman doing the dispensing gets nowt! There was a good mix of people there, from students to local regulars, all enjoying the peaceful nature of the place. Definitely will be going back for another visit when next in that part of the world. Grahamstown is the better for this establishment!
