Being unfamiliar with the charming town of Saugatuck, I met a friend for dinner at Phil's Bar & Grille because of its high rating by TripAdvisor reviewers. The restaurant, apparently located in a building which previously was a movie theater, had a certain design charm. On a week night in mid-October it was quite busy. Staff was cordial and helpful. However, my salmon entree was both unremarkable and forgettable.

Monday night, August 19 @ 7:30 pm (not very busy)...My husband works for a beer distribution company. He's old school and is starting to hone his new career and get into the craft beers; he wanted to try many of Saugatuck Brewing's offerings he hadn't had yet, so we stopped in for dinner. I ordered a pint of Rosé cider; very good! My husband ordered a flight. They offer a three-tiered system (a flight of 6 tier 1 products costs $14/tiers 2 & 3 will be $16 [I believe]). Holy moly! Each beer he tried (and shared) got better and better! We both LOVED the blueberry beers; the blueberry lemonade shandy and the blueberry stout. I'm not even a blueberry fan and they were delicious. The potato chips and french onion dip was very good; a very unique dip. I ordered chicken strips (5 large, meaty pieces) and he had the bacon & cheddar burger with parmesan fries. We were stupid to order additional fries with our meal, we couldn't eat them! We were stuffed on good food, good drinks, and good service. We will be back (& we live over an hour away)!

Wonderful food, generous drinks, genuine hospitality ... for 32 years now meeting the changing and diverse dining desires of the Saugatuck resort community, all house-made & cooked from scratch, open all 52 weeks a year, sourced locally whenever we can, a
Our visit was to celebrate a birthday. Friendly good service and warm comfortable ambience . But the pork chop parmigiano was a total nightmare!! I reacted without any sense of appropriate behavior when the plate was put in front of me. I gasped outloud along with laughing with embarrassment that this was what I ordered. It was a monster brick of food that should not be served to anyone with a normal healthy appetite. Too much of everything! And not that great tasting. Dry. I always plan to take leftovers home but this was several days amount of food! I agree with another review that it's difficult to imagine someone thought this was a good idea. Must be someone with connections to a cardiologist or gastroenterologist who needs more patients. Next time my order will be for a salad. Will be saving both my money and my stomach. We're so sorry this item didn't match your expectations. It's clearly greared for those seeking value (hence the menu name ... "Poor Man's Pork Parmigiana") or those specific flavors. You might better enjoy our summer-time version featuring a single 10 oz all-natural local pork chop, and we hope the other nice features of dining here that you mention will bring you back again. As always, everything we serve is guaranteed. We'll get you something else or adjust the bill. We're here for the long term in this our 35th year. Thanks. JIM
