The building and its history are amazing! Been operating as a resting place since the XIV Century. It’s sad though for it not to hit the mark, not even a low mark at that!Mattress older than the Tudor four posted bed, black mould in the shower, full English breakfast that might have been adequate when Britain (rightly so) had an appalling reputation for food some twenty to thirty years back.Today, with the high standards, offered by chain hotels and even quaint B&B’s this place does not deserve a good review, especially for the price I was charged for my stay. It’s sad really because the waiting staff were accommodating and nice, location is fantastic and the room I got was generous.Clearly it’s run by people who don’t themselves use many hotels, it feels to me that they operate without context of what’s out there, currently.

If this is your local, you enjoy the atmosphere and aren't looking for anything special from the food then this inn may suit you fine. But if you're looking for gastropub-level cooking and professional service then look elsewhere. The food we had was perfectly OK but very ordinary and lacking in flavour, and the service was definitely amateurish. No cheery farewell or thank-you when we left - and we hadn't complained or been rude about anything. For this level of quality, the food is overpriced. A couple of days later we ate in a restaurant in South Warwickshire which charged less and provided absolutely top-quality food plus really professional service: see my other reviews. Oh, and parking if difficult.Thank you for your review. I am sorry that you thought the food was ordinary. You are the first person to comment on this and if you read our other reviews you will see that most people enjoy our food. We would be interested to know what dishes you had? Perhaps you would like to come again and try our Autumn menu which will be available from mid-September. I am sorry you had problems with parking but we are simply very busy at the moment.

I booked a table online the day before and asked for a quiet corner as one of our party finds it difficult to hear in a noisy environment. When we arrived we made ourselves known at the bar and that we had booked. We were shown to a table, which was not laid, and given some menus to peruse. When the barman (may have been manager I am not sure) came over to take a drinks order I again mentioned that we had booked, which he responded to by telling me 'I know, I'm all over it'. What struck me as strange was that a table had been laid up, in the window seat, for four people. As we sat having a drink the pub filled with a large group that were attending a wake, which clearly began to monopolise the bar staffs attention and created a considerable level of noise where we were sitting.Eventually I approached the bar and asked the lady that had taken our food order if the table that was laid up was for a booking. Sure enough the table was actually for us. Not quite 'all over it' then?!My impression was that the barman was less than impressed with us moving. He was certainly polite, but there was a sense that we had transgressed. We were the only diners in a pub full of people from the wake. It was noticeable that we had to wait some time to get food and some time to get service in between courses. We also had to take the initiative and go to the bar to get a bill and pay. Clearly they had to deal with a very large group of people from the wake and I can understand that a table of four having dinner was probably an inconvenience they could have done without. They perhaps should have said this when we booked? Particularly as I was asking for a quiet area.I would have to say that the food we received was very nice and I would have no hesitation to recommend the pub for that. It wasn't the best of days to judge the service but the lack of attention to our booking was, for me, disappointing and came some time before the wake arrived, when the pub was quiet. My recommendation to the pub would be to think about how you make those that book online feel like they are getting great customer service.Colin,Thank you for your review. You have booked the the table online the night before so we did not have much chance to contact you. However, since your table was booked for 12 midday we did not see it clashing with any other bookings. Having said that, only part of your party arrived after 12, with the last gentlemen arriving at 12.22pm. This meant that the pub was getting busier by then. We have prepared a table for you, a table of four, but as the bar was getting busier and you asked for quieter area when you booked, when you have eventually arrived for your booking, I have made a decision to move you to the table of 8 (despite getting full). This was a table in the window, which we could see from the bar so you did not get lost in the crowd and it was as far from the bar (and the noise of the mourners you mention) as possible. At no point have I been anything but understanding of the fact we were extremely busy but wanted to make sure you and our other diners were taken care of. In your private messages you then change tact completely and personally attack me alone for quite frankly I am not sure what, I personally cleared you and your own party acknowledged you wanted desserts in about ten minutes to allow your dinner to go down. I understand we are all human and mistakes happen, however on this occasion I strongly disagree with your review and your findings based on your opinions with no foundation. I have asked you again when paying your bill "how was everything" and even then no mention of any of the any of the above, if you had,I am sure we could have had this conversation then instead of in a public forum. On the day of your booking we did have a wake, which was much busier than the family and ourselves expected, which was a testament to the lovely lady who sadly passed away.
