We took my Mum to the Kings Head for lunch as our son was over visiting from abroad. We hadn't booked but arrived around 12:30pm and luckily there was availability for a table. The staff were all very friendly, there was a specials menu and the normal everyday menu with a good choice of food. Three of us had the soup and one had the scotch egg for starters, then we chose the gnocchi, chicken caesar salad and fish and chips for our mains. The food was absolutely delicious, couldn't fault it at all. There was a nice atmosphere in the restaurant and what with the excellent service and good food we spent a very nice couple of hours in there. The restaurant started to fill up and was fairly busy for a Wednesday lunchtime, which shows it is popular. We would definitely go to the Kings Head again the next time we are in Ongar.Hello MrsSandraL,Thank you for the review! We're glad you had such a pleasant experience with us. We look forward to potentially seeing you again next time you're in Ongar.Kind Regards,Donal

A Traditional, Good Old Fashioned Pub, Right In The Middle Of Billericay High Street.
We had come to do some shopping in Billericay High St, and were looking for somewhere to have some lunch which had to be dog friendly as we had our 2 little dogs with us and we stumbled upon this place. It was very busy and we went up to the Bar and ordered something to drink and eat and we were told there was a little delay on the food but should be with us in a bout 20mins and sure enough it was. My husband had the Chicken Mayo on Granary which he said was very nice and fresh too, and I had the Roast Beef with Horseradishe well it was probably one of the best Roast Beef sandwiches I have eaten in a long time, both were accompanied with some salad and crisps too and was also very reasonable. The staff were friendly and friendly to our dogs and if we have to come back to Billericay we definitely will head straight for the ChequersThank you so much for your review xxx lovely to hear x

From the impeccable service, to the great daily specials this place never fails. The food is fab. So far beyond 'pub grub'. This is a true foodie pub - even the ham, egg and chips has been elevated to something quite amazing!! We are locals and take The Hoop for granted. We really shouldn't as we are so lucky to have this gem on our doorstep. Cannot recommend enough.Thank you for such a lovely review, I'm very glad that you enjoy the food and continue to return to us on a regular basis, look forward to seeing you in the future.

Going into the Nags Head is like going in a time machine back to the days of when pubs were great. I should know as the last time I came to the Nags Head was in 1995. No one on mobiles, chatter and laughter all around. A warm welcome and smiles from the locals. Just simply a terrific pub.

Six of usmet for our annual lunch near the home of one of the group. This was one of the better value and pleasant meals we've had for a few years. The staff were pleasant and helpful. There was a reasonable selection of beers to suit our varied tastes. The choice for 4 of us was the standard fish, chips and mushy peas and the food was very good - large fish in a crispy batter with 'proper' chips. The chicken pie and vegetables more than satisfied another. And the last enjoyed his beef lasagne, although it looked a little sloppy to me as a frequent visitor to Italy. The 'puddings' menu was of a good length and we all had something - the apple pie with custard and ice-cream was excellent. We'll be back!Thank you for taking the time to leave us your feedback. We are thrilled that yourself and your friends enjoyed your experience with us. Please come back and visit us again soon.

Waitress was really nice and friendly. Halloumi starter was lovely, cod with chorizo and mash was a bit disappointing. The piece of cod was overcooked and small. Overall the dish was quite dry. Banoffee cheesecake dessert was delicious!Maybe think about changing the background music played in the restaurantSo pleased that you enjoyed your starters and desert so much. With regards to your main course I will ensure that your comments are fed back to the chefs and restaurant team.We do hope that you will come back and visit us in the near future.Kindest regardsREIDS

Visited with another couple on Saturday. We have been to this restaurant on several occasions, if you are looking for a decent meal at a reasonable price this place is worth a visit. Menu is what you would expect, service was a touch slow but not a problem, waitress was pleasent and the food was good.

Booked a table for Sunday lunch, after reading some great reviews, for a meal to celebrate my son's birthday. Expected a very good meal but it is not what we got. The meal consisted of a plate with 2 large yorkshire puds practically filling it ,a few roast potatoes,a table spoon of peas and runner beans with some chopped carrot and a couple of small slices of meat.My wife and I ordered the lamb and we both had a piece of grissel running all the way through it, not very nice. My son and his wife ordered the roast beef which was nice although they only got 2 small slices each. All the meals were served cold, luckily the gravy in the boat was hot which made it edible . Hardly the best Sunday roast in town (as they say on their website ) Do not think we will be returning here anytime soon

Went here for my birthday - we had no idea where to go, but this came up as good so gave it a whirl. From the outside it looked like a local pub for local people, but once inside, it was brilliant. Attentive friendly staff, amazing food, reasonably priced and really nice. We'll be back I'm sure!
