Restaurante O Lagar do Douro Superior

Went there twice in April, but I know this restaurant from a long time...In both recent visits we asked just for entries and the answer of the waiter was "I'll check with the kitchen if is possible..." and it was possible. The main courses are made only for two persons (cost €25) and that obliged a couple like us to eat the same, wich I consider annoying.Eated slices of bread with olive oil and salt, eggs with "farinheira" (traditional portuguese pudding) and "pata negra" ham, drinked a bottle of red wine from Vermiosa village (around €11), purified water and coffees.Bill: €42,5.The main problem with this restaurant is the menu focused in cod and meat dishes with plenty of olive oil. If you don't like meat (pork and veal) or cod go elsewere...The other problem is the snob treatment of guests by the management.

If you look for a straight forward but clean and spacy place Dias is just fine. Today I had octopus prepared with corinder. Both Potatoes and rice plus a side salad. Fruit salad as desert. Not very crowdy place. Modest people but very kind. At some distance from the centre

Restaurante Arco-Iris

We had lunch here on a Sunday noon. The restaurant, on the first floor, was full with Spanish guests and therefore quite busy. We had relatively good dishes, such as "arroz de mariscos". Service is not so good. Our daughter had an omelette that was far to salted ... error in he kitchen, I guess ... The waiter proposed us to have a dessert and then things started to go wrong : apparently the deep freezers were not functioning too well, as a consequence of which the ice cream they finally served was half molten. If was wrong not to grant or even propose any discount for this problem. This restaurant is probably OK, but as we did not get the service one may expect, we would not go back.

Cantinho Cafe

Great little cantinho, nothing fancy, just the place to enjoy one of the many bottled beers from around the world stocked here, we sampled a few during our two day stop. Or a plate of local fresh produce with fresh crusty bread and coffee. We also thoroughly enjoyed our evening meals here, a good bottle of wine helped pass the evening, to finish with a nice Beirao. Sit out on the terrace to admire the magnificent views whilst surrounded by the pots and plants, greenery and flowers, peace and quiet in truly tranquil surroundings. The hosts are most helpful, pleasant, cheery and generous. A must visit if in the area. So grateful for your kind words, your fantastic impression about us... and we hope that we still gonna into that track; - We will continue to try to do better and better ... every day!Thank you, thank you, thank you!

It is not a gourmet restaurant but it offers quite good Portuguese dishes – look for its specialties. The portions are quite big; if you are three just ask two meals and share. That way will have some “space” for one of the delicious desserts. Enjoy!

Taverna da Matilde

Reviewed By Brave-Pete

We were recommended this establishment by our host who had heard good things. She was spot on. From the outside in the evening it is nothing special. You walk into a bar that does not do justice to the restaurant room behind. We arrived just before 8pm and the barman was surprised at our visit because he did not speak English and dashed off upstairs. It seems no one else did but we were ushered through to the dining room which was lovely. With a lot of effort a lady went through the menu and we made our choices. Every effort was made by the staff to help us and we were well rewarded. The meal was great, starters, two good mains, wines and coffees came to about 38 Euros and we were well pleased. I had a steak which was cooked and cut up on a sizzling plate at the table. We were able to relax after the meal by sitting in some comfy chairs by a roaring fire sipping our coffees and drinks and when we went to leave we were made to feel even more welcome. Unfortunately we were the only ones in that evening but it was a rememberable meal. Many thanks
