As a serious foodie, I have tasted many pizzas in Italy and have found the pizzas at La Carbonella to be absolutely superb - the best I've ever had in Italy. They are no ordinary pizzas - they are genuine gourmet pizzas with an excellent thin crust and made in a wood fired oven. A good indication of the quality of the pizzas is that even though they are always extremely busy, they would not consider using pregrated parmigiano cheese - instead they would only grate the cheese just before serving - how impressive is that! A positive surprise about La Carbonella is the price - extremely good value - average price about â¬5! If you don't like waiting, it is highly recommended that you go early ie around 8pm - otherwise it could be a long wait. The fries or patate fritte are excellent as well. If you like white pizzas (ie without tomato paste) you must try the Pizza Rustica - with grilled zucchini, eggplant, smoked cheese and parmigiano - really good. So if you are in Puglia, you must go to Castellana Grotte and try the wonderful pizzas at La Carbonella.

Al Pozzo was recommended by the owners of our villa, a short drive away. I wish we'd eaten there every day now, as we ate in some terrible Pugliese restaurants during our two week stay in the area, which is a shame given the plentiful, natural ingredients of the area. This restaurant has a small menu and no off-putting photos of the food. It is off the beaten track and family run - with a lady making fresh orrechietti at the back. The waiter was incredibly helpful and honest. Though his English was as limited as my Italian, we got by. We ate in the restaurant twice and had take away pizzas one night. The highlight for me and another of our party was the chicory and fava bean primi dish. A very typical dish of the area. It was lovely if you like veggies. The meat and pasta dish eaten by one of our party was also excellent apparently. The waiter explained that this was a special dish eaten on Sundays in the area. The meal was followed by a lovely semifredo. Good food, friendly, relaxed, unaggressive service. The lesson of the holiday was only eat in restaurants recommended by local residents. Many are closed at this time of the year unfortunately, but, thankfully, this one wasn't.

Between helmets and swords, tigers and gladiators, in a picturesque setting of the Roman, Ancient Rome pub you can discover flavors and atmosphere of times past. a wide selection of pizzas cooked in a wood oven with 4 mixtures (classic, soy, grains, hemp)
We really struggled to find an open restaurant in Castellana on a very wet cold February night, after driving round for half an hour we stumbled on Antica Roma. It didn't look too promising at first glance but the table of students in the corner seemed to be enjoying themselves and frankly there was little other choice. I am really glad we stayed. The food was good quality and tasty and best of all it was quick! Mind you, about ten minutes after we arrived it filled up and within 20 mins it was heaving. Really good value, lovely friendly staff and a very lucky find.

Da Bernardo is a true pizza restaurant. There is nothing fancy about it. Outdoor seating is on the pavement of the street (no traffic). Pedestrians who want to use the street, just walk through the restaurants in between the tables. Service is OK, You get what you ordered after a short wait. The menu offers pizza in a wide variety, but not much else. Local wine is cheap and good. The pizza's are perfect! Nice and crisp, well filled/topped and very tasty. So if you want to have pizza for dinner, in a simple setting and at a good price, this is the place for you. Perfect for families, not for romantic candle lit dining.

I must admit that we stopped here just because we were hungry, and considering the location I thought it was going to be overpriced and unremarkable. I was completely wrong. We had a selection of "puccia" and salad, and everything was delicious and plenty of it. The staff was friendly and helpful. The price was very reasonable.Really enjoyable meal in a great location just outside the Grotte. Grazie mille a nome di tutto lo staff.

The location is absolutely superb! A small evocative courtyard in the very old heart of the village. Giulia, the restaurant's chef and owner, has specialized in revisiting traditional dishes: we were served an amazing variety of starters, each one with its peculiar ingredients and flavors! For the first time in my life I ate portulaca salad... I didn't even know that herb existed! After that we had little room left and we took only half portion of a first course each. Around 10:00 the restaurant was packed (Southern Italians like to sup late) and the service did slow down. We had to wait a while for our dessert. But that makes no difference: we are definitely going there again!

At Pizza&Spaghi, as the name say, you can taste really good pizzas and spaghetti, the two most famous Italian foods :)My suggestion is to try their spaghetti with lobster and tomato... If you don't like pasta, you can have any kind of pizza you can imagine! For starters we took a good "impepata di cozze", an hot dish of mussels cooked with tomatoes, a little bit of onion and pepper. Alessandro, the young owner, is really kind and professional, just as as all the waiters. Quality food and reasonable prices... The restauran is always full. I suggest to book a table in advance.

We went here on a recommendation. The service was appalling, the wine was undrinkable and the food so salty we simply couldn't eat it. I think this is the first time we've ever walked out of a restaurant hungry. To add insult to injury, it was quite isolated and we had to travel through several narrow lanes in the dark to get to it! Sorry, won't be recommending this place to anyone.Dear guest,We are extremely apologize if the dinner at our restaurant didn't satisfy your expectations. We are very sorry and all we can do our best to improve in the future.Regarding your comment we won't say anything about the appalling service not described, but we would like to dwell to the wine.We have 40 different labels and honestly we don't think it's our fault if you chose what you didn't like.About the salty food, we cannot justify and it has a pity that you didn't say nothing to the waiter, we would definitely resolve and take the unlike dish out of the bill.Regarding the insult to injury of the several isolated and narrow streets to get to us, we suggest you to change your GPS device, maybe you haven't even looked at the sp.237 road, where we find, the main artery that links Castellana Grotte to Monopoli and it's really easy to reach from Castellana and to Monopoli. In any case we hope that you will consider us for the next trip and to see you again. We will be very pleased to welcome you as our guest.Best regards, Recchia Francesco .

The food is pretty good if you are lucky enough to understand a little bit of what you are ordering. The staff is not speaking English and the menu is not translated. We managed to get something that tasted amazing and it was good value for money. Thank u so much for for appreciating our food, see you soon.

Quando ero piccolo venivo spesso per il flauto fritto, del quale avevo un buon ricordo.Tuttavia non ho avuto la medesima sensazione quando sono ritornato.Costi davvero contenuti ma il tutto è fatto male. I panzerotti, appena fritti, risultano gommosi e unti. Imperdonabile.
