Falafel Golani is situated across from the police station in the sleepy town of Afula, Israel. About a two-minute walk from the central bus station, it attracts travellers and locals alike. Jews, Arabs, tourists - you name it, all flock to this Mecca of the fried chick pea.Owner Dudu Peretz named the stop in honor of his brother who fell in the 1973 Yom Kippur War. He was a soldier in the tough-as-nails Golani infantry brigade (think of the Marines with an attitude and you're getting close) losing his life trying to recapture the Hermon Mountain Lookout position that had been overrun by Syrian commandoes at the outbreak of the war. Israel eventually took back the position at a heavy price in human life. Don't expect anything fancy here. For 15 NIS (New Israeli Shekels - about $4), you get an artfully-filled pita with falafel balls, chips (that's french fries to you Yanks), and fresh salad. You then can add a plethora of salads, pickled vegies and hot sauces. Believe or not, falafel is great with sourkraut! Personally, I would add tehina sauce, pickles, fried eggplant and then more tehina.
