Schenectady /skəˈnɛktədi/ is a city in Schenectady County, New York, United States, of which it is the county seat. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 66,135. The name "Schenectady" is derived from a Mohawk word skahnéhtati meaning "beyond the pines". The city was founded on the south side of the Mohawk River by Dutch colonists in the 17th century, many from the Albany area. They were prohibited from the fur trade by the Albany monopoly, which kept its control after the English takeover in 1664. Residents of the new village developed farms on strip plots along the river. Connected to the west via the Mohawk River and Erie Canal, the city developed rapidly in the 19th century as part of the Mohawk Valley trade, manufacturing and transportation corridor. By 1824 more people worked in manufacturing than agriculture or trade, and the city had a cotton mill, processing cotton from the Deep South. Numerous mills in New York had such ties with the South. Through the 19th century, nationally influential companies and industries developed in Schenectady, including General Electric and American Locomotive Company (ALCO), which were powers into the mid-20th century. The city was part of emerging technologies, with GE collaborating in the production of nuclear-powered submarines and, in the 21st century, working on other forms of renewable energy.

Casa Real Mexican Restaurant

I really did like the food we had at this restaurant for lunch, but unfortunately our drinks were quite the cluster. We arrived at 12:00...the restaurant had been opened an hour. Our group of 3 ladies ordered 3 Margaritas-it was National Tequila Day!! 2 of the Margaritas ordered were frozen, and we were advised the machine needed to be turned on and would take 5 minutes. We said we would wait, and that we definitely wanted all the Margaritas at the same time. About 15 minutes later she returned saying the machine was taking a while-so best to switch the 2 to on the rocks. One was still wanting frozen, and again we said we'd wait. Another 10 minutes passed and she brought 2 on the rocks drinks, and let us know that they were out of the "blue" Margaritas. It seemed like they could have figured that out from the beginning. Not a good start.I had taco salad, and replaced meat with beans. It was very good. I think this restaurant is a good one, but unfortunately on our particular day-the Margaritas just weren't working, and that was too bad. The ambiance and decorations are authentic.

La Mexicana

Small authentic Mexican restaurant (6 tables) attached to market in ethnic neighborhood. Inexpensive, good-quality stuff. A real find!

This was our first visit here with friends after reading about it and hearing good reviews. We were not disappointed at all. Started off with some excellent Margaritas. The tacos were excellent the were many versions all the same price $2.00 per taco. I had the seasoned pork, chorizo sausage and steak ,all were excellent. My friend all also had the tacos and had the same opinion I had. The ladies each had the Chile Rennelos and they both thoroughly enjoyed them. Also there is a Mexican market next door that has all kind of dried peppers, spices and other items to check out. We all said we can't wait to go back and try a different menu item.

Yeah, if you want REAL Mexican this is NOT the place. They don't do a buffet anymore, which is good seeing the one they had was always cold, brittle tortilla's, nasty black (cold) beans, cold chicken, tasteless "hamburger". Draft beer was undrinkable, and flat and it smelled bad. Lines were probably dirty, and bartenders don't have the sense to let it run to get the crap out. Bartenders are dead from the neck up. I don't know how they stay in business. A disaster. I think I would go hungry rather than try to eat this abomination. Ugh......

I pass by this establishment each day on my way to work. It has been there for many years. There are always a good amount of cars in the parking lot. My husband and I went for a late breakfast. The inside is cozy. They have made good use of the small space by really maximizing the seating. We had what seemed like a very long wait time for our food but there were not many open seats. The wait staff was hustling so I did not want to bother her too much. My omelet was excellent! It was a broccoli and cheese omelet with toast and home fries. It was the best I have ever had. Enough said!

Have been here for music over the years and always enjoyable. Funky, casual spot in the Stockade area, good to relax in their comfy chairs and hear live music. Eclectic menu. They serve a lot of vegetarian & vegan dishes in addition to meat. My friend was very impressed with the Gluten Free choices and loved what she ordered. Everything inexpensive and well priced. No alcohol but great ginger beer! Please note: cash only.
