Gem of a Mexican Resturant hidden away in the back of a Mexican market. The ladies are friendly and they make excellent tacos! Perfect for lunch.

Most of the restaurants in Othello are Mexican which did not inspire us. And some are really cheap stuff. From the outside, this looked like one of the better restaurants in town. Service was prompt and friendly. My soda was refilled four times. Food was very good and helpings are huge. The restaurant was also very clean.

Checo's Mexican Grill

Best restaurant in this small town but is hidden on the outskirts of town so is unknown to many. I grew up in Othello, visited my folks there this weekend, went to Checos twice in weekend because it was so good!

I really AM a food snob. I've spent years cooking professionally and expect restaurants to be professional. Other than the general cleanliness of this restaurant, this would have been a 5* visit. More on that later. After a very long day my wife and I opted to give Checo's a try. We had been disappointed with a different restaurant in town the day earlier. We were hopeful there. Although it was late afternoon on Sunday there weren't many vehicles in the lot. Often that's a harbinger of bad news. There should have been a handful for any successful restaurant. Anyway...We were quickly greeted and sat. Or menus were brought and drink orders taken. My wife chose carne asada, her go to. I was looking for something I hadn't had in awhile. I saw a barbecoa torte and was sold. Our chips, salsa and bean dip came out. Our entrées didn't take too long to come out. It was obvious the dinner's were fresh, you could smell the goodness. I took one bite of my torte and was in food love. Then I took a bite of my wife's carne-TASTY! (FYI-The extra onions came from my wife's asada.)I had also ordered a side of rice thinking I'll be hungry still after the torte. Not so. Not only was that the best torte I've had in years it was also bigger than any I'd had in ages. Yay on both accounts! (By the way, the time read wonderful.)The downside to the place was the cleanliness. There was a LOT of stuff under the tables and on the floors. It wasn't so busy that that should have been the case. In sure it was an oversight but, again, as a professional, it's not anything a customer wants to see.
