A friendly greeting of ‘hola’ as you enter this very colourful restaurant. The decor transports you back to Mexico, with cushions depicting Mexico’s famous artist Frida Kahlo scattered throughout. You have the option of Alfresco dining in warmer weather.Struggling with my Spanish I managed to order Chilaquiles and I was not disappointed-very nice.By the way the staff do speak English. If cocktails are your thing they offer these too.So relax in the comfortable seating to the sounds of Latin master Julio Iglesias serenading you.

I have now been here twice and the second experience was considerably better than the first. Mexico is a chain of restaurants in New Zealand and at their Petone establishment I got some of the worst Mexican food I have ever had and it wasn’t cheap either. Our party started with two dips – guacamole and pumpkin – both lacking in flavour. The fish in my fish taco still had its skin on, and it smelt and tasted stale. I left some of it. The fried chicken was soft and slightly juicy, but still bland. The chicken quesadilla was a poor imitation of a toasted chicken sandwich made in a toastie pie machine; none of the promised chilli was evident. Disappointed so far with everything I ordered but still hungry, I ordered the Crema Catalan which was to be “orange blossom scented with chocolate granita.” It was nothing of the sort. It was a poor take on a crème caramel. The body was like thick custard, warm in one corner, cold in another and room temperature in between. The caramel coating was uneven. The scoop of chocolate ice cream was so cold it had icicles in it. Fortunately my second visit was much better. The dips had chilli and other accompaniments And were anything but bland. The beef ribs were superb: soft tasty flavoursome meat which melted in the mouth. The ceviche was freshly made and delicious. Just so much better than my first visit where every dish I ordered had severe defects.

We decided this year to forgo the normal pub lunch for our company christmas lunch and come to the Cantina instaed. It has a great reputation plus its other restaurants in the Wellington areahave wonderfully cooked, authentic mexican foods. Once seated we ordered our food with a little help from the managementand were delighted withthe result, backed up with a few tequila shots and of course so e magaritas and mexican beers. The starting and shared platter was wonderful wirh taste sensations in every bite and the mains were sublime. A great atmosphere even though the staff were run off their feet and no complaints from us, nor from the other punters who were all thoroughly enjoying themselves. Will we be back? does Stevie Wonder?
