Find out what Mexican restaurants to try in Gloucester. With its sandy North Shore beaches, rocky outcrops, green parks, hemlock woods and wild estuaries full of shorebirds, it is no wonder that Gloucester has attracted such a rich and diverse artists' community. Fitz Hugh Lane, Winslow Homer and John Sloan are just some of the artists who have taken inspiration from Gloucester's beautiful surrounds. Still boasting dozens of galleries and boutiques, as well as museums, theaters and an artists' colony, the city's art scene clearly continues to thrive.

Tacos Lupita

I got the fish tacos. They arrived loaded with onions, lettuce, and tomatoes. The tacos were to come with pico de gallo. I got none and didn't remember til I left.. I actually thought that they forgot to put the fish in. I picked through the lettuce and finally saw some shreds of fish. Wow. I have had fish tacos in other places...nothing as sparse as I got here. The 2 tacos for 7 bucks...not worth it. Wont go back.

Jalapeno's Mexican Restaurant

Reviewed By gig-girl2

Over the past few years, I keep returning to Jalapeno's (it IS the only Mexican restaurant in town) hoping that my poor perception is a one-off blip, but it is not. If you like your Mexican on the bland side, then this may work for you, and I don't mean that in a bad way. But if you are looking for truly good Mexican and margaritas, look elsewhere. I've given it many tries in 24 months, but I'm done.It feels as if Jalapeno's keeps cutting corners with ingredients, prep and cooking. If you order caldo tlalapeno soup, the pepper-heat could be inedibly hot or on a par with grandma's chicken soup. Servers have said it can be ordered to taste, which makes me wonder how it's prepared. About three years ago, I noticed a precipitous decline in the amount of green peppers served with dishes such as fajitas -- three strips of green in a sea of grilled onion. And the black beans (whole or mashed/refried) are absolutely tasteless. The guacamole is inconsistent in both texture and taste. At my most recent outing in December, the complimentary salsa amounted to small bland bits of tomato swimming in liquid. While the bartender will make a margarita any way that you request, frozen or on rocks, the margarita menu relies on an orange juice mix as a base for most drinks. The table service is just adequate. The bar service is inconsistent depending on the night and the bartender I have often been ignored as a single patron at the bar for long periods of time, but it does depend on the bartender and whether they are busy chatting with a group of friends.Several years ago, Jalapeno's expanded its bar. This eliminated a lot of congestion, but on the flip side, it is now almost cavernous. The bar tables are unusually wide for a restaurant, which may seem like a good thing, but if you're trying to have an intimate conversation, it is not. I would almost say they are huge. If you want to talk and to hear, best to get a regular table, because of the echo effect, the overall noise in the bar and the distance you will be from your partner. One good thing is the regular Tuesday night music -- always a good bet, even if you set your food/drink expectations low.My thoughts for Jalapeno's are to reinvent its bar area to be more like a warm cantina, with some smaller bar tables, warmer table lighting, and acoustic design to reduce the noise. Some QC in the kitchen, with more oversight. And offer the standards, but focus on doing a few dishes and drinks really really well.
