We ate here last night after arriving in Dixon for an event tomorrow. Chose this Mexican restaurant over Las Palmas where we ate last year. Salamanders is much more authentic but perhaps less familiar than typical American-ized Mex that our kids are used to. My Wife and I liked the beans, rice, salsa verde and our entrees--she had enchiladas rojas and I had house specialty steak and veggies and melted cheese with flour tortillas. The kids thought the salsa was too thin, the beans too thin and lacking in flavor, and the Mexican cheese less tasty than usual melted cheddar. Obviously I don't know what other families would experience but our teens are not restricted to Taco Bell and Carlos O'Kelly's--they are usually fairly adventurous. Service was friendly but a bit on the slow side. Prices were reasonable for a family of 5--$60+ tip including two small margaritas. I'd recommend this place as 'average plus' for adults but I'd go elsewhere with kids--at least mine!

Don't get me wrong. The food is really pretty good and the place is clean and the service was really good. Prices are average. I just don't like the building. They only have seating in 1/2. The lights shine down in your face. It certainly was not a inviting fun atmosphere. Sorry it feels like you got all of the furnishings and building 2nd hand. There is nothing special to make the evening pop. It is a shame with such good food and service.

As you can see in the picture of the front of this restaurant, the name is now Las Palmas. Whatever it's called, the food is both plentiful and tasty. I ordered the vegetarian fajita and received a skillet full of steaming veggies (carrots, mushrooms, broccoli, cauliflower) and a plate filled with Mexican rice, refried beans, and a guacamole salad. In addition, I got 3 flour tortillas wrapped in foil. All of this food cost $8.95! For 6 adults and 2 children, the total was less than $80, and some of the adults shared a half pitcher of Margaritas. The service was prompt, and the setup and drinks were quickly replenished.
