Restaurants in Coalinga
We stopped here for a stretch and a quick bite to eat. There is a Subway and Baja Fresh along with a good size store at the Valero gas station. Subway and Baja Fresh were both the food you'd expect at any of their stores. We stopped here heading south on I-5 instead of Kettleman City to avoid so many people. Good quick and easy stop.
We frequent this restaurant weekly are we are never disappointed in the great food. The chicken chimichanga is my favorite, and at $4. the best deal in town. The wait staff can be overwhelmed when the dinner crowd hits, but the freshly made chips and salsa make any wait worthwhile. There is a sense of small town community in this restaurant complete with Formica tables and tile floor, which are squeaky clean. Their new restaurant located across the street will soon be opening, making more room for parties and groups.
I took a gamble and stopped by the Beacon gas station on our recent drive through Coalinga on Hiway 33 and opened the door to La Piedad #2...I am so glad I did...The building is ancient (Looks like 20's or 30's construction) and there is a huge open floor and then the counter consisting of metal racks and behind that stood a smiling a friendly lady who uses the grill behind her to whip up some Mexican dishes...They do breakfast and lunch/dinner type items on a MEGA small menu that hangs above with a Coke logos all over it...Had the pollo taco...Wow! Marinated and so soft and delicious...The "Homemade" refried beans were to die for...My lady had her carnitas and I guzzled down the "Hecho in Mexico" Coke that was ice cold from the standing reefer by the cash register...Low cost? All that was UNDER ten bucks...What a little jewel in the rough...Coalinga is an ag/oil town on the far East side of the San Joaquin Valley and it got it's name from the railroad days...Refueling the trains they had to stop at "COALING STATION A"... Yea, it became COALINGA...cool, huh?
If you are on I-5 traveling and get hungry somewhere between the Bay Area and Bakersfield (and you will,) then detour and drive out to Coalinga. It is several miles into this small town, but the food here is family cooked and served, and the price is hard to beat. $11 for large two-item combo plates, and $7 or so for a smaller one-item plate with rice and beans. They have horchatas and beer if you are ready to switch drivers. It's a nice family feel place with the kids watching the Disney channel while the grownups work. Of course, chips and mild salsa first! The menu has about everything you would expect. Enchiladas, tacos, burritos, sopes, fajitas, chimichangas, rellenos, chile verde, colorado, etc. Not too spicy and zesty.

Open 24/7 to cater to the crews that work around the clock out in the oil fields, this little mexican taco shop is awesome. I had the carne asada tacos with everything/flour tortillas and they were fantastic. Highly recommend. Good price too.

We are frequent patrons at El Reyes Restaurant. We enjoy the variety of Mexican food served here. The service on the post part is efficient. I think if you're a first timer to this restaurant or if it has been a long time since being there, you will enjoy eating here.
