Ever adventurous, I will frequently look for a new place to try, and often to the chagrin of those with me, Iâm always an advocate of the classic hole-in-the-wall. This place had all the earmarks of being good: the funky little building, odd location, and small-time vibe. Unfortunately, it failed to deliver. The place itself is somewhat of an awkward building, build into a hill alongside an RV repair shop. An attempt was made for the interior to be stylish and cutesy, and it almost pulls it off, but a stand up drink cooler being used as an extra fridge for ingredients in the dining area, along with a halfhearted attempt at decoration ruined the feel. The chips were good, with a little seasoning and almost enough salt. The salsa, however, was very unremarkable, and tasted like something store bought, rather than homemade. The chile verde sauce is excellent and should be smeared on everything, including you face. The burrito was almost delicious thanks to the verde sauce and decent carne asada but failed in the end due to being filled with a lot of rice and little else. The side of rice and refried beans were nothing special. The corn salad was good, but you only got two bites worth on your plate. Thankfully, there was a big serving of really good guacamole. All would be forgiven if it was cheap, posing as decent food for a good value, but I paid $12 for a burrito filled with entirely too much rice. And the amazing verde sauce? A sneaky EXTRA $2 on top of that. I left almost full and almost satisfied. Almost.

This was Mexican food like no other. There were dishes and moles that Iâve never heard of before. Our serve, Karina, was awesome. She even gave me a sample of the many moles to help me figure out which ones I liked and didnât. The young man who made sure we had plenty of chips and drinks was an excellent conversationalist and we enjoyed his excitement for the food there as well as his future. ( he didnât have a name badge and I didnât catch his name). The manager, at least Iâm guessing thatâs who he was, was busy but still made time to talk to us about our visit. So the atmosphere and service were like a well oil machine. The were so many people working and each seemed to be professionally trained to do their specific job and to help others do theirs with the customer being the top priority. This may just be my perception, but sitting at the bar gave us a good view of the overall operation. Our food came out fast, colorful, and delicious. We had the Puntaâs de Filete, the Red Iguana, and their guacamole was some of the best Iâve had. Iâd suggest getting the Red Iguana because it has so many different dishes (their chile relleno was one of the Ray Iâve ever had), a side of guacamole, and split it because itâs soooooo much food. This was definitely a memorable place in all my travels. Loved it!

Seven of our family gathered at Chile-Tepin for dinner recently. This restaurant can accommodate large groups--the table next to us had 17 guests. With this many people in a relatively small room, it was very noisy. We ordered family style except for me. Because I am vegetarian, I chose the vegetable chimichangas which were huge! I don't know if the authentic Mexican chimichanga is crisp, but that is how I like them, so I was a bit disappointed when the Chile-Tepin version was soft and not crisp. The flan was delicious as were the sopapillas, but we had eaten so much of the main courses, that we couldn't finish off the desserts. The restaurant had specialty drinks (alcoholic) but since I don't imbibe, I don't know if that qualifies for a "full bar" or not.
