Quite an old building so it doesn’t look appealing on the outside. Went with some co-workers for lunch around 1-2pm and some dishes were already sold out. Ordered the kaisen don (seafood rice bowl) set for 850yen. Such a huge portion - couldn’t finish it! The fried items change depending on the season.Note there’s no wifi, and no menu with pictures. Some items have basic English translation though.
Soul is a local establishment on State hiway 147 in Azumino Ohmachi. We decided on A course with strips of bacon and lean beef miso soup , rice salad and some begeysbto bbq. They place charcoal into receptacles and you cook your own meal on the grill. We were hungry and the portions were quite adequate. We’ll be back

Set in a very small building and only having room for 10 or so people, this restaurant provides a quintessential Japanese experience. The menu changes based on availability of produce and such. We had the vegetable and mushroom ramen (sumikawa) which was excellent. This restaurant is off the beaten path, but is highly recommended.

The Showaken is a typical Japanese neighbourhood Tonkatsu restaurant. It has a retro feel to it and could be used as a location for some tv drama set in the Sixties and Seventies- the Showa Era-hence the name. The emphasis here is on locals and the food is hearty, generous, and economical. This is not a gourmet restaurant but a place to "scarfe" up a meal. The Showa Ken definitely delivers what they promise, a generous portion of deep fried crumbed pork cutlet on a bed of rice with a large dose of Tonkatsu sauce, a small green salad and some pickles with a small bowl of Miso soup all for jpy880.00 , your typical Tonkatsu Don.(Bowl)There is also a Chicken Katsu Don an alternative to the Katsu Don.Should you want to go a bit more upmarket, you might try the Fillet Katsu Plate, I might go back to try this some other time.I felt like I was in some time warp here and actually felt quite comfortable eating my gi-normous helping of Ton Katsu Don.
"Wachigai" is named after the house owned by Kuribayashi family, who was one of the influential merchants in Omachi City, Nagano in old days. The house is more than 120 years old and maintained beautifully by the family, yet the house became empty as the
I came across this establishment actually in October 2013, and again in October 2012 for the Omachi Alps Marathon. I arrived the day before the race and was walking around near the hotel and train station. There was a long road with restaurants, and shops along both sides but most shops were closed down and looked a bit worn down. Wachigai looked old but in a nice wabi-sabi way - not like left to entropy but was clean, well maintained and open for business around 11 am. They serve local Japanese dishes and sake - something light before race day so I went in and was shown to a big tatami room with low table and it was all for myself. Ozanza noodles is one of their local specialties. After ordering, I looked around and there are several private rooms for group dining, and a garden looking out the room. Inside, is another garden with trees in the center - overall, it looked very relaxing and quiet. There weren't a lot of customers (to be fair the whole place around Shinano Omachi station looked deserted) for Saturday lunch time, but it's a very relaxing place to eat a local cuisine and I hope more people go visit it and enjoy good japanese food!
