Youâd better not to miss this restaurant if visit Nagoya! This Atsuta Horaiken is located in Matsuzakaya but not the most famous standalone store though, their unagi courses and the service are still quite nice. The pros is itâs not necessary to make reservation in advance, you may just wait in line for entry, while the cons is itâs pity there is no much nostalgic interior design if you really care about the atmosphere.

Firstly, the Sumo Wrestler Pig is definitely an iconic symbol of this shop. Secondly, if you are coming to this location and using a map application to find it, use a mixture of map and good intuition. I wandered around for a while before I actually found out I was walking the outside perimeter of Meitetsu, and I totally missed the '9F' in the address, as my map kept recommending I go to the basement. Nope, 9th Floor, and it's basically right outside the elevator--with a huge line of people. Now, the line intimidated me, after I spent so long trying to track down the location, but it moved amazingly fast! 20 people disappeared in roughly 10 minutes. This is helped because they take your order ahead of time, so when you sit down it's only a few minutes before your order appears before you.Warning to English Speakers. When I asked for Eigo (English) Menu, for the first time, I was told they only carry Japanese, Chinese, and Korean. Don't worry, this stunned all my Japanese friends, except the most snooty of them. Still, we spoke enough to get my order taken. If you're there for Miso Katsu and you're relatively hungry, get their largest portion. There is a 'first timer' option which costs a little less with half the serving (1200 Yen vs 1600 Yen, I think), but it's a far better deal to go all the way if you can eat. The regular portion was good sized, but I was able to eat again a few hours later. So after a short wait, I was seated. They offer cold green tea in pitchers. For my plate, it arrived, and they quickly covered it with a generous pour of aka (red) miso, I believe. I didn't really get to read anything while I was there for my own clarification. As I said, the portion was decent--sliced tonkatsu covered in miso sauce, a bowl of rice, and a bowl of miso. The flavor combination was definitely unique, a twist on more plain katsu I've had in Japan and abroad, a bit more robust and less salty. This alone made me wish I ordered a larger serving. They also had Yabaton gifts and merchandise, which I stopped to look at. I slightly regret not buying their T-shirt, as I said, the image is very iconic, and my friend loves pigs--just not for eating. That said, even though this is one of several locations nearby, it was pretty crowded, and it's not a huge location--there's just a lot of foot traffic with Nagoya Station so close to Meitetsu Department Store.

After a day trip, my friend and I were looking for the miso katsudon. We thought Yabaton was closed for the night and were wondering around (we misunderstood for the wrong one since we can't read Japanese). Then one of the people were yelling out miso katsudon and then we went in. I got it on the hot plate and it was delicious. I don't actually like the katsu sauce but the miso sauce was very rich in flavour. I really liked that a lot. The portion is huge! So I got my hot plate first and then they poured the miso sauce over it. I kind of wished that was on the side because by the end, my katsu was a bit soggy. I'm not sure how to ask them not to do it since it seems to be part of the process. One person will drop off the plate and another person will come over to pour the sauce right infront of you. The meal set I had was about 1,700 yen.

We chose the lowest grade (still expensive at 3500 yen) which tasted just fine. The staff were friendly, even offering us the English explanation on how to enjoy the meal. The eel and rice is divided into four quarters. First quarter is eaten just the way it is served. The second, green onion, radish, and wasabi is mixed in. The third, hot broth is added along with the seasoning. The fourth, diner can choose his favorite serving from the first three. All three had its unique taste. I preferred the addition of broth as it took away some of the heaviness from the eel grease. The portion was way too small to justify the 3500 yen price tag though.

The food and service was excellent. We first tried on Saturday night but the wait was about 90 minutes so we moved on. Sunday night the line was shorter and we had our seats in about 20 minutes. Once we sat down they immediately took our order. Food arrived in about 5 minutes. The eel was delicious. The menu has limited English but was easy to decipher with pictures. It was well worth the wait.
