I've transferred the trains at Odawara station several times, and most of the time, I took time to try local restaurants around. This restaurant 魚國 is my favorite restaurant. It serves traditional Japanese 定食 (Teishoku); most of them are fish based (sashimi, baked or broiled). Very good flavors. Friendly services. Reasonable price (dinner 1600-2000 yen range). I'd come back here to eat again and again.

We were visiting Odawara castle and chances upon the shop. It is a small shop by the corner, run by two elder ladies. There is a public car park right after the shop around 100m at a rate of yen1200 for an hour. Popular among the locals. Good for lunch or dinner. You could order different size of unagi by weight. We went for 230gm portion as shown in the pictures. It’s served with soup and pickles. Good size for an Asian. If you are feeling starving or want to satisfy your craving for unagi, you could go for 300gm.

This place sits less than a minute exiting from the left of the East Gate of Odawara Station. It serves very fresh seafood rice bowls. I love the anchovies served 3 ways. Sweet! I yearned for more and wouldn't mind returning here again. The place is a bit small with limited sittings and it is likely that one may have to queue during peak hours, either for lunch or dinner. By the way, this place was Michelin listed in 2015.

The wows are to the extreme level here! Maximum taste. Such a wow large tasty prawn! - but okay. If you can not speak or read japanese here is the deal: write your name and number of people in the book outside and wait to be called, there is always a line up at this place. And for good reason! Do not come too late at lunch time 1 pm is pushing it. Make sure you know what you want before you are called in. They will ask before you go inside. Best idea is to take what they recommend to you the horse makeral is the specialty I liked the shimp and scollap that came in a combo type dish. Also got sashimi which was really good. Many wows all round well worth the wait. Thank you very much.

Our first Sushi in Japan and in this gorgeous place. It was quite crowded. The outside entrance looks more like entering a temple with its heavy wooden decoration yet as you enter it becomes very simple...a bit like a big canteen but all the tables were made of solid wood. The food was fresh and very tasty. I love sushi any day but not everything. In fact I much prefer Sashimi, without the rice which is quite filling. Here we had a good selection of both.

We enjoyed a quick Soba Noodle lunch here in the Odawara Station. The service is fast and the prices and food good. They have both standing and seating options.

E-mail booking available! Please inform us the date, time and number of people on E-mail.
Found this restaurant via TA (thanks ;-), and it made us choose Odawara as day trip from Tokyo. The restaurant is easy to find, close to the railway station. You can register at the door (n° in your party etc..) on an i pad.. we didn't quite get it at first, but were swiftly helped out by another waiting (Japanese) customer. As it was a weekday, and getting somewhat late, we did not have to wait long at all. The (lunch) menu is quite extended & offers a lot of options in various price categories. Our waiter (+/- native American English speaker) was very helpful and we opted for the Odawara Rakuten lunch menu & the Odawara sashimi&temura lunch menu. Presentation was beautiful, and the taste & freshness were really awesome, loved every bit!! A visit to Ryo Odawara is worth a (big) detour!

Tomoei Eel is a Michelin Star unagiya located in Hakone and they specialised in serving the freshwaster blue eel. In fact, when we went there, they only asked whether we wanted the unaju* (grilled eel with sweet soy sauce) or shirayaki (grilled eel seasoned with salt). I think most tourists went there just to eat the eel!We didn't make any booking at all and went there on a whim. I listed this restaurant in my itinerary but it wasn't a must-visit place for us. After we hired our Nissan Cube, we had some free time to kill before our onsen session. Since we didn't book, we were told that there was a 40 minutes waiting time. We said yes and walked around the Hakone area for a bit. The eel that Tomoei used is always prepared on the day when you order it. They use spring water from 100m underground to cook their food. The spring water that they used is of the same quality with the one that sake breweries use called Miyamizu. Miyamizu is high in calcium and low in iron. The Yaizu's freshwater eels are always kept in a 15.8 degree Celcius water.I ordered the unaju which came with a bowl of kimosui (eel liver in clear soup) and otsukemono (pickled vegetables). The smell of the sweet soy sauce really filled the room when I opened my bento box. My unagi was so plump, tender and butterflied perfectly! This dish was so perfect with some sansho (Japanese pepper). My all-eel meal (una-zukushi) was very satisfying.I think Hubby was a bit jealous of my dish but he was entertained with the mini crab on top of his plain shirayaki. The shirayaki was really interesting to eat especially with only light soy-dipping sauce and wasabi on the sides. We could taste the smoky and smoothness of the flesh but since both of us weren't eel purists, we definitely liked the unaju better. The restaurant is really easy to find because it's located at Odawara entrance to Hakone area. If you're unsure, Google Maps will be able to guide you there. There are two car parks available for the customers. One is located right in front of the restaurant while the other one located right across the restaurant. There's a crossing bridge that you can use to walk from point A to B.One thing to remember is that they don't have credit card facility at the restaurant. The facility was removed so they can keep the price down for their customers. There will be days that they run out of eels as well and unfortunately you can't call and make a booking. So it'll be better if you come earlier or just be there when they open the restaurant.Tomoei Eel opens from 11 AM - 6 PM on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays. They also open every Monday and Tuesday from 11 AM - 7 PM.Explanation: * If unadon is eel over rice in a bowl then unaju is eel over rice in a box :-)
