We went for sashimi and the quality was excellent. Selection a bit limited (by my standards) but more than adequate for a good meal. Beef negi starter was a bit overdone (dry) and lacked sparkle. Ambiance was very pleasant and noise levels suitable for easy conversation. Service was warm and professional. Excellent quality/price rapport. Next time I'll try the Korean BBQ.

Although we have lived in the area for several decades, this was our first visit to Ota-Ya. When we arrived at its off-the-beaten-track location last Saturday evening, we discovered that it was smaller than we expected and quite busy. However, we did manage to get the last available table. The manager was friendly and engaging, and she promptly made sure we were attended to.Apparently from other reviews, many locals come for the sushi; however, we ordered a tempura (Chicken & Vegetable) and two udon (Nabeyaki and Yaki) entrees. While we were waiting for our meals, the manager came over and talk with us for several minutes, despite the restaurant being quite busy. Soup and salad were tasty, though I thought they could have been a bit less salty. The main courses soon arrived, hot and very tasty. Portions were larger than at most Asian restaurants in the region at which we have eaten. For example, the tempura entree included six large pieces of chicken and six vegetables.though I did not partake of the udons, both of my companions were very pleased with their choices.Though quite full after the main meal, the manager convinced us to share what was a a large serving of tempura green tea ice cream. We liked the ice cream itself but In hindsight, given the size of our meal, I think we would have been happier with a scoop of plain green tea ice cream. We plan on returning to Ota-Ya in the future. Both from reading other reviews and our own experience we will plan on going on nights when it is less busy or else make advanced reservations.
I had high hopes for this little sushi stand in the farmers market. I pass by weekly and always think I'll try it sometime. This past week I was flying solo for the evening and stopped in for takeout. The shrimp tempura roll was decent, but the eel roll (usually a fav of mine elsewhere) was tough and chewy. I could barely get through the seaweed wrap, and it had terrible flavor. It's typically priced for sushi rolls -$20 for two rolls, but the overall quality was comparable to mall sushi. I'd give this place another shot at some point, but would probably steer clear of the eel next time...

We made a reservation for Hibachi for 7:00 and they didnât seat us until just after 7:40. This is the 2nd bad experience like this this with hibachi. They had two young girls managing the crowd on a Saturday night. They were totally overwhelmed. I donât understand how they can screw up the hibachi tables so bad. We wonât be doing hibachi here again.

While this restaurant may seem small, it's huge on flavor & variety of sushi. Plenty of other options for our non-sushi eating friends as well. My only eyebrow raising moment was the fact that they don't have iced tea - other than the canned variety. Otherwise an excellent experience - and I would come back again in my travels to this area.
