Reviews on Japanese food in New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada. New Westminster is a historically important city in the Lower Mainland region of British Columbia, Canada, and is a member municipality of the Greater Vancouver Regional District. It was founded by Major-General Richard Moody as the capital of the new-born Colony of British Columbia in 1858, and continued in that role until the Mainland and Island Colonies were merged in 1866, and was the Mainland's largest city from that year until it was passed in population by Vancouver during the first decade of the 20th Century.

Hayashi Sushi

Had a lovely meal here and great service from the lady who runs the place. The tempura roll was delicious! I'm not a raw sushi fan but there was still a lot of choice here for cooked meat dishes. The rice was also very well made, and the sake very tasty. It's not a huge place but every table is in its own 'subdivision'/booth which is nice. Highly recommended!

Hi Dozo is a MUST try. The staff are amazingly friendly, make great recommendations, hours are great, prices reasonable for the sushi, and entrees. The environment is clean and welcoming. And the Food ... It will not disappoint. The sushi is so fresh and the rice rolled tight and thin so you don't feel heavy afterwards. It is plated beautifully and will have you wanting to gorge it and savour it at the same time! I have tried a variety of sushi, appetizers, and an entree to get a feel for consistency and never have they erred on taste, playing, or service... Which is rare in my books for sushi. Kudos to the chefs and staff at hi Dozo , I have been back and will continue to return.

Okonomi Sushi Restaurant

Tremendous improvement with the new name....new owners, too??? Many lunch specials, something for everyone, not just sushi. The Bento boxes are huge. I had a noodle dish that was different and extremely flavourful. The third person in our party chose sushi. Everything was fresh and well presented. The pink rice is excellent...not a sweet as traditional sushi rice. Prices are fair and the service was attentive and helpful. Everyone seemed eager to please. I'm really happy we tried this place. I was nervous because Okonomi Sushi left much to be desired. The décor was brighter and cleaner and didn't have a lingering smell of grease like it had previously. We ordered a sushi platter for take out for a party and that, too, was excellent and affordable. They should do well, they deserve to.

Victoria Sushi

Reviewed By pennyandrusty

If you’re in New Westminster and looking for some aburi sushi, you’ve probably heard of Victoria Sushi. This tiny, hidden gem is located in a residential neighbourhood with serious challenges for parking.Although I first found this place back in 2014, I haven’t returned recently so I decided it was a time for another revisit for their aburi sushi. Their aburi oshi sushi (aburi = flame-seared, oshi = box-pressed) is almost as famous as Miku and Minami but at a slightly cheaper price point.Aburi Salmon Oshi Sushi is definitely something that you should try here if you’re a fan of aburi sushi. But the Aburi Scallop Oshi Sushi is just as fabulously creamy. You get the slightest hint of heat from the jalepeño slice on top of the salmon.Honestly, if there’s such a thing as sushi porn… this is it.One of the worst kept secrets here is that they have off-the-menu items that you can order that’s really drool-worthy. The Temari Sushi Set ($23 for 9 pieces). Whereas oshi sushi is pressed into a rectangular shape, temari sushi is shaped into little balls. Seriously, these things are super cute!I don’t really recall all of the items in this plate but it included salmon topped with a jalepeño slice (similar to their aburi salmon oshi sushi), a tender but firm fish topped with pea shoots, beef with red pepper (I actually really liked this more than I thought I would as the seared beef had an interesting flavour and the slight chewiness was enjoyable), sweet shrimp topped with an olive slice (this was interesting but I found that the searing made the shrimp too chewy), and saba with green onions (this was the best of the bunch as the mackerel was buttery and had a very distinct flavour to it).Continuing on, there was another piece of salmon topped with a jalepeño slice, then the creamy scallop topped with tobiko, another scorched white fish that was topped with spinach, and popping tobiko topped with a a jalepeño slice.Seriously… that mackerel was awesome! It actually inspired my next visit when I ordered their Aburi Sime-Saba Oshi Sushi prepared with sweeet vinegar marinated mackerel with a house katsu sauce. I paired this dish with another off-menu item called “The Spoon” ($3.75 per spoon).Plating is exceptional but keep in mind that it takes a bit longer to make these off-menu items so be prepared for a wait. The first thing that I tasted in the spoon was the olive and the popping tobiko but that was quickly replaced with the creamy, melt-in-your-mouth aburi (salmon and scallop I think?) and followed with a lingering spicy sauce at the bottom of the spoon. The dish is artfully decorated with pea shoots and red peppers. On another visit, I opted for the Toro Nigiri ($2.75 each) and Aburi Unagi Oshi Sushi. The buttery toro had a nice, long tail-to-rice ratio. While the unagi was not thick pieces of eel, they were super buttery and creamy. If you find yourself in a hankering for aburi sushi in New West, make sure you try this place out.

Ikoi Sushi

Reviewed By johnny2bc

It was back to Ikoi Sushi, a fond favourite of ours, for dinner recently, in honour of the daughter’s birthday once again, and the dining experience was a total delight. Food and service: as has always been our experience there, the Chef performed his ’magic’ with the food preparations and presentations, and service was so friendly and accommodating - here’s what we (threesome) ordered, shared, and enjoyed this time:— spicy agedashi tofu — ika sugatayaki (sliced, bbq whole squid — prawns tempura — assorted sashimi — roll combo (dynamite, California, and BC (salmon) rolls — kaki fry (deep-fried oysters) — chicken yakisoba — unlimited, hot green tea (provided, at no extra charge). With exception of the yakisoba, these were all dishes we have ordered and enjoyed previously.Nice presentations, and very well-made preparations. The tofu was delicious, so sweet & creamy, with just the right amount of hot & spicy sauce — daughter and I were looking forward to the squid, and this tender & tasty preparation sure did not disappoint — Mom sure enjoyed the prawns tempura and deep-fried oysters - they were ordered mostly for her, and the preparations were right on, daughter and I confirmed that with a taste or two — the rolls were fantastic - thin rice coverings and such tasty, quality ingredients - major yum — the sashimi was for daughter and I - it was served at the perfect temperature, so fresh-tasting, and much-enjoyed — the yakisoba was a small touch disappointing - the chicken was tender & juicy, noodles decently cooked, the preparation was rather oily, and just seemed to lack the flavour we’re used to with yakisoba preparations we have enjoyed elsewhere (a small negative though, as we didn’t leave anything on the plate to return to the kitchen). Once again, our dining experience at Ikoi Sushi proved why it has become such a favourite of ours. It’s a small, local neighbourhood, family-owned and operated restaurant, and such nice people have been putting it all together so consistently-well since they opened a few years ago. And good on them for their much-appreciated efforts!

Ki Sushi

Reviewed By djsmapping

I generally have low expectations for Sushi/Japanese places in and around Vancouver; so many are not run by folks from Japan, and so many have limited menus. So when a friend said "let's meet at Ki Sushi, just outside the New Westminster Expo Line station, I was a bit doubtful. But this was a great place, with exceptional service, a really extensive menu, food well prepared and delicious. We all had different meals -- my soft-shell crab and Yaki Soba with chicken were as good as I've ever had, including restaurants in Japan; the sushi and soup and goma-ae and other foods were equally well-prepared and yummy. And best of all, the servers were from Japan, so we got to chat with them in Japanese about their suggestions, and to enlist their help.I can't wait to go back here again. The menu includes all kinds of items, both hot and cold, and I know if Ki Sushi were closer to home I'd be here all the time. Total price for a great, filling meal, under $20 CAD per person.
