Things to do in Nakatsugawa
There's just around ten seats in this one man restaurant but it is really worth waiting for. Very good soba and one of the few Japanese restaurants where we got houchija for drinking. It's an open concept and it is interesting to see your food to be prepared.

We were warmly welcomed by the owner of the restaurant who served us perfect coffee and hot sandwiches. When asking her information on how to get to the tourist information and some additional information on bus connections she made a real effort to get this info. She is speaking quite well english and she was very very friendly. Prices were moderate and the view on the vally from the terrace is stunning
We just stumbled across this little restaurant and it serves wonderful food. The chef stands in front of the shopping street window preparing the dishes. They have an English menu, written out in a little notebook. If you are around, certainly a place to visit.

Chicory

This soba place is located at the end of the main street in Magome, or the beginning of the path going to Tsumago. The place is managed by an old lady who is very friendly and warm, welcoming us and helping to explain the different soba on the menu board (in Japanese) to us who cannot read the language. The setting is very family style, with interesting stove seats on one side but we opted for the normal table which is easier for us. The vegetable soba we ordered is very tasty, the vegetable and assorted mushroom is fresh, with some yam mash added in the traditional style. The hand-made soba is perfect in texture, and frankly one of the best I have ever tried. I basically finish the whole bowl with the broth and everything, and the price is also very reasonable. If you are in Magome this is a soba restaurant I really recommend.

This place felt more like a hostel with 13 rooms down two halls on two floors. Showers, toilets, and kitchen on the first floor, toilets on the second floor. Chimes ring at 6:30 am to get everyone awake for 7:30 breakfast, then you have to be out of there by 9 am. I don’t think the “family” lived on The premises. I thought a minshuku was a family home that was opened to weary visitors with a home-cooked meal. We ate in a big hall with rows of tables and an industrial kitchen behind the dining hall. The inn is run by a Filipino family. Inn fees are low, adding to the ambience of a hostel, I suppose. I would not choose to return as it was not the “experience” I expected.
