What a surprise to know about this sushi restaurant in Mill Valley. I am most impressed with the quality and huge selection of sushi, sashimi, rolls and traditional meals on the menu. Our party of four shared a variety of the menu faire. All garnering rave reviews for taste and presentation. The other aspect of dining at this restaurant was that it was a far cry from my childhood in New York City in the 1950's where back then sushi was unheard of and even up to day, many Japanese restaurants I frequent don't cater to many children. Here at Samurai, it is like a child's mandatory introduction in the appreciation of sushi. definitely a family restaurant where children of all ages are catered to.The only drawback is the deafening volume of nice from the chatter of children and adults in this comfortably intimate sized restaurant.Definitely a word of mouth recommended place As their website is non informative and the restaurant does not even have business cards. On a Wednesday evening this place was non stop filled with a majority of family diners with children.

Firstly, the decor has some lovely touches of Japan. We were greeted warmly and seated, drink orders and service was brisk. Very tasty food. I think Robata refers to a type of grill or method of grilling. We had maki or sushi rolls, grilled chicken wings, grilled salmon belly and grilled corn. The corn was sweet, the salmon was fresh and yet had smokey flavor. Chicken wings were done just right and the maki were great! We couldn't finish and everything tasted just as good if not better the next day!

This place is off the tourist main line, so you just see locals here. It's a small comfortable place with very friendly staff. There is a small parking lot behind the restaurant, which is helpful because there is very little parking on the street in front of the restaurant. The sushi is excellent. I particularly liked a mushroom dish that I had never had before. The sashimi, the sushi rolls and the associated goodies were all first rate. That said, they're not giving it away. Dinner for 6 was about $600.
Next door to Whole Foods, so you would expect a busy place. Not so. Our first visit one year ago left a good impression and review. Now that we have returned the third time, our impression has moved to average and just OK. Service is still prompt but expected as the place was almost empty at noon. Ramen has become ubiquitous and competitive in these high end areas so we are now underwhelmed with their flavors and selections. If Ramen was an inexpensive dish, we would keep on returning but not at the prices charged for average.

arrived 8:07 on Saturday nite. ignored for 10 mins. waitress took order & informed us kitchen was closing, we wouldn't be able to order anything else. everyone was surly, looked unhappy. no greeting, no "how's your food," no smiles. she rushed to clear our plates at 8:35. check presented, all staff disappeared by 8:40. I will never go back.
