Myself, my wife and a friend were visiting a farmer friend who lives near the restaurant and decided to go there for lunch. It's out there all on it's own and not on any high street but worth making a detour to get to.There was an interesting mix of people from suited salarymen and women to truck drivers and farmers all nestled around the most beautiful wooden tables I have ever seen, They were made from big, highly polished circles of wood with the bark still around the outside. Actually, almost everything in the place was made of wood and the walls and shelves were covered in eye catching pictures and trinkets. In the entrance is a big, red faced tengu, wooden dogs and a wooden elephant. In the restaurant is a great fish shaped fish bowl with a goldfish swimming around inside. I love these individual Japanese restaurants and bars with their quirky features. Another positive is that it's a no smoking restaurant which still aren't the norm in Japan and nade it a very comfortable environment to be in.The menu is not huge but has enough choice to satisfy most needs. Good fresh ingredients cooked like you would expect in a country family kitchen. No frills just good recipes well prepared. Generally speaking I am not a fan of udon but I decided to go for the tendon set with hot udon and it was absolutely great. The ingredients were fresh and the flavours smashed anything you can get in Tokyo. I'm also not a huge Japanese rice fan but whatever they did to it here made each grain plump and bursting with flavour. The tempura was the best I've ever had. My wife and another friend had the nabeyaki udon (hot udon in an earthenware pot with mochi). My wife is Japanese and she was in seventh heaven with her choice. So how much did I pay for four people? Well, I did get a bit of a shock when the bill arrived but it was a very pleasant one. A meal for four at JPY3,760 was less than I paid per person for a meal in Tokyo the night before. Also, the tea and sobayu (a drink made from the water used to boil the soba) was all part of the price. The next time I go to visit my negi farmer friend in Ibaraki I will insist on going here for lunch again. It was lovely and the staff were warm and friendly. The pleasure they took in preparing such good food was written all over their faces as we said our thank yous and goodbyes.
