Find out what Japanese restaurants to try in Biei-cho. Biei-cho is an artist’s canvas of snow-capped mountains and fields swaying with lavender, poppies and bright seasonal blossoms. Art galleries feature the beautiful handiwork of local artists inspired by their surroundings, and the Panorama Road is an aptly-named path to all kinds of sites, particularly local farms and craft workshops. Sup in a charming café to get the true essence of Biei-cho.
Things to do in Biei-cho
Wide choice of small dishes (some not so small - ideally go in a group to sample a range of plates). Chef partly trained in France. Some original dishes varying with the season and the chef's mood. One of my regular restaurants. Friendly relaxing atmosphere. Menus in English but the newer dishes are only in Japanese on the wall. Beer, shochu, nihonshu (limited) and some cocktails.
Nigiri sushi and chirashi (scattered on top of a bowl of rice) - my preference is the former. Around 1000yen and out of this world luscious rice compared with what you get in EU/USA for several times the price.
A solitary restaurant in biei. A dish is a course only. Please choose from earthen pot rice or today's pasta.
It's a bit out of the way, but if you have your own car/motorcycle/bicycle, it is very much worth a trip to this little house out of the way, hidden between two beautiful hills. From the name, I was expecting a noodle restaurant... But I had a 5-course lunch, packed full of local ingredients and delicious flavours, for only 2000 yen! The dishes were exquisite, highly creative -- a fusion of Japanese and European fare -- and worthy of a 5-star restaurant, with astonishing value. The only thing to keep in mind is that there is only one set menu, no a la carte. When I visited, the menu didn't offer a vegetarian option. The owners are a very warm and welcoming young couple, who decided to move out of the big city to start this little restaurant in the middle of nowhere. Their courage, dedication and talent are worthy of praise and support!

This restaurant located at the back of the Biei Tourist Information center. The Shop was decorated in Local Japanese Style. The Big set of Ten-Saru Zoba is very good and packed with many delicious ingredients! However the atmosphere was not welcome for foreign Tourist. Price is 2,200 JPY for the Big Set but others is in considerable rate.

this is a cafe run by family -> got okasan, oneechan, otosan etc...i stopped by at this cafe while walking up to Shikisai no-oka, at first intention just to have a cup of warm coffee.but, since it's almost noon, I ordered meal for lunch anyway.i want to avoid meat, so I asked them for vegetarian meal if any (i can eat fist & eggs).they didn't have any but can change the main ingredients in one of the listed menu. So, they suggested to me to take the health lunch (which have pork sausage -> but can change it to egg)it was quite impressive that they asked me in details to suit my eating preference (i.e rice over potato and etc).I ordered the health lunch + coffee costs me about 1500Y (just expensive as any restaurant in Hokkaido).but, it worth the yen, since the vegetables were fresh and just nicely cook. one of the best meals i've had during my 10 days trip in Hokkaidofrom the window in the cafe, i can see fantastic view of panorama road.i will definitely want to go there again for the same meal :)

This is a wonderful Japanese food restaurant in the town of Biei. Their main feature is soba (buckwheat) noodles with goma (sesame) flavour - they call it "goma-soba." Their soba is made of 30% buckwheat and 70% wheat flour. The buckwheat is obtained within Hokkaido, according to a restaurant server. The menu covers almost all common soba noodle dishes and tenpura dishes in a clean-looking and very open restaurant building along National Highway 237.Their service was prompt and tasty foods at no more than about US$10 per person without drinks.

This was one of the only options for the famous Biei curry noodles on a Sunday night. I tried the fried pork chop with curry noodles. The place is frequented by locals.

As another poster pointed out, correct name is Junpei not Jumpei. We went there under recommendations from family who just visited few weeks ago, and was pleasantly surprised! We both had tempura shrimp, one with the shrimp separate (think that was called a set) and the other a shrimp bowl with sauce drizzled on top. We didn't try the pork or curry, the tempura shrimp was good enough! Shrimp was large and very juicy, one of the best tempura shrimp I've ever had! There is free parking right beside the restaurant, no need to reserve although we did arrive early (around 1130am for lunch). Many locals frequent this place so might be packed if you arrive at peak lunch hour
