Our first visit here after new ownership and a decor change, the pizza and service still excellent but the prices are much higher, sadly. Great salads and good selection of drinks too, I still like the place.

After the recent move by this restaurant, we decided to try it again, because, well, it was always okay without being anything special. Now it's less attractive, the ambience it had in its old location was quite nice, depending which "room" you were seated, but now you have little to no choice. Apart from the walls of wine bottles, you feel like you're seated in Mcdonalds! Big fail there for the interior decorator. Another loss after moving was losing the connection with the mexican influence on the menu that Potato Hut brought to the old place. Sadly, it's not included at the new place. Now it's just another pizza/salad cafe of which there is already too many in this small city, and they don't do anything to make it different or better than any of the others. Average, at best, in the food, and typically poor service. A convenient location probably means we'll see the place again, but it won't be our personal choice. Deep sigh, come on Sumy restaurant entrepreneurs, you had a chance to do something different and make something better, but failed big time here. I'm sad, my family is sad, and judging by the near empty Saturday night crowd last night in the restaurant, Sumyites are sad too.Dear Guest! We would like to sincerely thank you for taking the time to write this review. In turn, we will listen to you and draw conclusions for the success of our restaurant. We sincerely hope to see you again in our restaurant soon.Best regards, Marjan Brown PR manager of the restaurant CELENTANO

Fonconi is about the closest place in Sumy that can pass at an Italian restaurant. True, there are cheaper places like trattoria Olivo and Pizzeria Symbiosi but there pastas do not have a genuine Italian taste (for which you will pay more but portion size is okay). It is a good idea to ask about prices as the computer might have different prices for seasonal items like fresh pineapply juice. Weird decor and dark -- would make a good bomb shelter! Recommend Pasta with Seafood under Tomato Sauce and Spaghetti Boglenese, which I liked better than the lasagna. Another possiblility is the tagliatelli with shrimp and salmon under cream sauce as a variant to the seafood under tomato sauce (however, to my taste, the latter is more delicious). On the high end of prices for Sumy but not too expensive overall (comparable to Port Royal pricing wise but a shade cheaper).. Mercifully located in the city centre.

A reliable restaurant, meaning the food is consistently good but the place is extremely popular so it's also always consistently busy. Approximately 50% of our visits here result in our walking out because of the extremely long wait and/or unavailability of a table. We have regularly gone here once every 2 months for over 2 years and the popularity of the place never wanes, probably because of the good food. The desserts also are usually excellent!! So far this year we have failed in the first 2 months to get a table. We took takeaway in January and simply walked out without waiting last month. The food is good but not THAT good! Our visit times vary from lunch through to early evening, the earlier the better for a chance at a table. Oh, and as usual, the staff really really need to smile! :)

Family restaurant-pizzeria "Simbiosi" is located on the street. Kharkov in the heart of Sumy. Has a cozy interior mixed with the constructivism of Hi-tech, all this is complemented by fresh flowers. The brightest and creative waiters give to understand an
Aspects I appreciate about Simbiosi:(1) Large pizzas are actually large.(2) Good quality ingredients in the pizzas(3) Pizzas are tasty and exhibit consistency without depending on who is the particular pizza chef on duty (4) Additions/Subtractions to the ingredients in a designated pizza are acceptedwithout protest.Did you notice that I only discussed the pizza at Simbiosi? There is a reason for that. Other items disappoint including pastas. Sorry but the pastas are terrible. (Even more expensive places in Sumy, unfortunately, cannot do good pastas - for example. Zdybanka) but it is not possible to make a good pasta at very low prices as that is indicative of lack of quality. No one I have invited to Simbiosi has liked the pastas. I am also reticent about the soups. A daughter of a friend of mine ordered creme soup of mushroom, which I joked looked like a plate of vomit. She ate it but did not like it particularly. For desserts, I like the sorbet and I have tried all the flavors except pineapple. The most delicious is cherry. It is worth noting that Simbiosi the pizzeria and Yappi the sushi bar have merged and accordingly you can order anything on the Yappi menu in Simbiosi and vice versa. I have previously reviewed Yappi but, unfortunately, what can I say? Have you seen the film, a comedy, from long ago "Honey, I shrunk the kids"? Yappi has shrunk the nigiri sushi cutting out my favorite моÑÑкой окÑÐ½Ñ (grouper or perch) and, worse, cutting down on the size of each portion; in actuality, they are serving half-nigiri-sushi pieces. So nominally you are paying 35HRN for a sushi piece (unsmoked salmon) but in fact it is a half piece so that in real economic terms a whole standard piece would notionally be 70HRN. I found this out and resorted to buying red caviar across the street in Silpo Manufaktura and used the caviar as "sauce" for the undersized sushi. Unfortunately, the variety of nigiri sushi is abysmal. If you like rolls, on the contrary, at least there is variety. One surprise is that I really like the udon noodles (which I ordered with pork) but the soup fo is awful. (It does not taste anything like the soup I ate in a veritable, dedicated Vietnamese restaurant in Minsk.)I sampled as well an item from main courses ÐСÐÐÐÐРСТРÐÐÐ called Pork (Ñвинина) di Mayale ku Losso, which turned out to be a pork chopped grilled to perfection but so small I would need to order several not to die of hunger! In addition, they have added what appears to be a steak menu. Unfortunately, I did not order a steak but I peered over to the next table and the steak looked quite appetizing. The bartender Vitya makes reasonably good cocktails.Wait-staff is pleasant and friendly in this casual dining venue.I have patronized Simbiosi several times and will patronize again -- for pizza!! Great for groups and kids. However, I do not regard this venue as a good place for Italian cuisine other than pizza. If Italian cuisine is what you are after, you are best to look elsewhere.

Came for supper mid-week with getting a table posing no problem and with a 6-year-old child, the waitresses really turned on the charm. In short, good first impression walking in. Like one of those Italians who wrote a critical review, I was not impressed by the menu. Unless you have a Michelin chef better to stick with the basics and not be too inventive. Chicken bouillon with noodles -- soup - does it get more basic than chicken soup? Sorry, I don't want black pasta in my chicken soup. I entirely reject black pasta actually. Whose clever idea? Anyway I removed the offending items and what remained was chicken in water -- seemed to lack any spice. No flavor to speak of. Would have been tastier even had the chef dropped in a chicken broth cube from a supermarket shelf like Knorr or Gallina Blanca! Okay, you get it - dish not recommended. This of course was not a good start -- if simpler dishes cannot be managed, then what about the more complicated?Let's move on to the pasta. Well, as the Italian noted, a basic like spaghetti with tomato sauce or spaghetti with meat balls, was not on the menu but a number of items are listed - one of which is spaghetti bolognese. Out it came and, instantly, it didn't look very impressive. For starters, portion size appeared small - doubt it was 250grams but, unfortunately, I didn't bring a scale. Taste was better than it looked but it was not meaty enough and, according to my palate, the recipe was not spot on in terms of the sauce: not the worst I've eaten but far, far from the best. One of my Ukrainian friends, who has visited Italy three summers in a row, touted the ossobucco. Of the three dishes I ordered, this was the best - although it was not quite ossobucco. First, the meat requires a joint in which you can find marrow and that is an important part of the dish. In this rendition, there was no bone. Second, the sauce was too onion-y and lacked, for the most part sauce based on tomato and white wine. Absolutely I don't want my ossobucco swimming in liquid but some gravy of thickness is requisite. Needs to be served with risotto, noodles or mashed potatoes. No such sides. Probably should have asked for the baked potato. Waitress recommended fries (!!) but I declined. (Actually, the kid ordered fries and the fries looked great.)Now my Ukrainian friend who recommended the ossobucco pulled a fast one not ordering it for himself but instead ordering a steak for 200 grn, $8 at today's rather unfavorable exchange rate. A good chunk of meat at a reasonable price. He was eminently satisfied. Perhaps I did not order the best of what is on offer at this establishment? (Last time I patronized La Spezia, admitted 3-4 years ago, I ordered pizza and was wholly not satisfied.)One silver lining was the dessert. The tiramisu was fantastic. Coffee dust sprinkled on fresh mascarpone -- some coffee beans sprinkled on the side -- this was a real treat after successive doses of culinary mediocrity. I might well patronize La Spezia again but I probably would try the steak and would certainly skip over all I ordered during the aforementioned supper except for the tiramisu. Still, for all my misgivings, in terms of Italian food in Sumy, the culinary offerings of this establishment towers over whats on offer at the Trattoria Viva Olive on Kharkovskaya and the new menu of Portofino. One final observation: prices at La Spezia are reasonable and most likely for that reason, the establishment can get crowded on weekends.
