Reviews on Italian food in Sulmona, Province of L'Aquila, Italy. Sulmona (Latin: Sulmo; Greek: Σουλμῶν, Soulmōn) is a city and comune of the province of L'Aquila in Abruzzo, Italy. It is located in the Valle Peligna, a plateau once occupied by a lake that disappeared in prehistoric times. In the ancient era, it was one of the most important cities of the Paeligni and is known for being the native town of Ovid of whom there is a bronze statue in the Piazza XX Settembre, located on the town's main road which is named after him.

We chose four different kinds of basic traditional pizza that you can top with typical products of our land,Abruzzo: Focaccia (pizza dough-oil-salt) Bianca (pizza dough-mozzarella cheese) Marinara (pizza dough-tomato sauce-oregano-Sulmona red garlic) Marg
There are several pizzerias in Sulmona and this is possibly the best if you prefer high quality local ingredients. You can choose a basic pizza such as Margherita and then, if you wish, add Abruzzese specialities such as percorino cheese, mushrooms, prosciutto ham and so on. Pizzas are the thinner and crispy versions often known as pizza Romana style - scrumptious! Really good value, too, compared to some of the competition round about. Indoors has a slightly quirky and retro music decor and there is, also, plenty of space at the back to sit outside. It is situated more or less opposite the Church of the Annunciata, right in the heart of Sulmona but a few yards off the main Corso Ovidio. Take away or eat inside we will be back, for sure. Highly recommended.

Wine bar with open kitchen that accompanies the wines from Abruzzo we are not a restaurant but ... the alternative to the restaurant, the menu with the right choice of typical Abruzzese quality products !
We were looking for a snack and a glass of wine and the owner served us. He was so friendly and helpful, We enjoyed ourselves so much and enjoyed his company, we cam back for supper with family members who lived in the area (and who knew the owner!). The food is excellent. Wine also excellent. The owner really knows. the area and gets great ingredients.

Located just near the Porta SanâAntonio, you will get a true sense of the local food of Sulmona. Most notably, you can choose from a buffet offering a variety of local dishes ranging from various treatments of zucchini, aubergines, red peppers, mushrooms and minced veal balls, as appetisers. For our primi piatti, we had the pecorino and spinach-filled ravioli served with a tomato ragu and for our secondi piatti, we had the roasted lamb such was essentially lamb cutlets. This was accompanied by a 2018 Villa Gemma Collins Teatine Igt Bianca from Masciarelli from Chieti, which was light and fresh and went well with our meal. The service was good and the restaurant was essentially full of locals. A great start to our visit to Sulmona!

From the very start was warmly welcoming. The tantalizing smells were surpassed by more delicious tastes of the many pizza choices. I tried several over a 4 day stay. Always the current one became my favorite. But the friendliness of the staff could rival its tastiness. There are many pizzerias in this beautiful town but don't waste your time--THIS IS THE BEST!

This Michelin restaurant is only open for lunch and we highly recommend that you make a reservation, because it was very popular and full of mainly local professionals. Mr. Pepino of Villa Maiella in Guardiagrele recommended that we visit this restaurant and we were exceptionally pleased that we did. For our primi piatti, we had the spaghetti with the agnello ragu, which had a hint of chilli and interestingly, mint. It was really good. For our secondi piatti, we had saccottino di vitello farcito di scamorza e cotto arrosto cotto al vino bianco e fungi, which was essentially a veal cordon bleu with mushroom sauce. This was served with an insalata misa and patate. The waiter brought a special vinegar made from Montepulciano dâAbruzzo wine to the table and told us to try it with the local olive oil. It was very special indeed. Needless to say, there was no bread left at the end of the meal as it was used in soaking up all the mushroom white wine sauce. While we simply could not fit in dolce, the waiter brought us a plate of divine petit fours, which comprised a coconut meringue; a meringue with pistachio nuts; biscotti, a jam slice; a chocolate brownie with hazelnuts; and a lemon slice!! Talk about spoiling!! Our food was accompanied by a 2016 Cerasuolo dâAbruzzo from Cataldi Madonna called Pie del Vigne, which is located in Ofena, Abruzzo. This wine is very different from other Cerasuolo wines that we have tasted in that it has the look and colour of a Pinot noir, because it is made in the old-fashioned way from red grapes, whereas the new style of rose is made from white grapes with a splash of red for colour and taste. The service was great and we certainly did not need to eat dinner that night.

Great food and wine is hardly a rarity in Italy or Abruzzo. Where this restaurant brings the whole thing together is in the service and particularly the ambience. So often Italian restaurants are bright and lack atmosphere and of course they are famous for having a TV in everybody's view in anything but fine dining environments. This however just gets it all right. It's classic abbruzzese food, done well with a creative wine list in a cosy, quirky environment. Three small dining rooms mean you feel you're in a small special space wherever you sit. There's a little bar area too which appeared to be uses by locals and I imagine the square on summer is set up well.Service too was exceptional, being English and speaking a little Italian it's nice when they still let you speak in Italian even if their English is better than your Italian!I'd go out of my way to visit this restaurant again.
