The baked ziti was like rubber, meatballs has way too much black pepper, crotons in the Caesar salad were soggy and the sauce for the spaghetti was watery. Gross not worth the calories!

Wow! Hubby and I were completely inspired by our experience a couple weeks ago when we (by chance) stopped to grab a quick bite before our grandson's baseball game. To start, we were greeted by a 10 year old little girl who obviously has spent her life in a kitchen, in a restaurant and has learned the art of hosting. She was so gracious. She asked if we would like something to drink and when I said "I would love a beer" she quickly said "Ok, my Dad needs to get you that", with a chuckle she was off to the kitchen. It was a few minutes before her dad came out and explained that his waitstaff had an emergency and they were alone tonight (owner/cook and 10 year old daughter). I'll be honest, my "ok, let's grab a quick bite before the game" attitude did make a face...... my husband looked at me a couple times and said "slow down, let's just experience this moment". This is probably every restaurant owners nightmare but honestly, I did slow down.........enjoyed my first Italian beer, a fabulous meal but something very magical happened that night. We watched as a regular (who brought guests with them to dine) stood up and start taking drink orders, bringing menus to those that came in, explaining the situation. His wife also started going around to tables to ask if they needed anything, while the 10 year old floated around doing everything she could to make people happy. My years of a waitress made me want to jump up and help too. Yes, we watched a couple people leave because like me earlier...... a quick bite was more important than the special experience. The owner came out of the kitchen several times to bring food and explained that "this is my home, you are welcome to stay and enjoy your evening for as long as it takes, everything is made to order"... He and his family are from Capri and he instructed his 10 year old in Italian often throughout the night. We got a tour of the downstairs function room and bar from the loyal customer who became family that night. What a night! We missed the kids baseball game but the lesson in compassion, brotherly love, family, kindness, empathy, solicitude AND a fabulous Italian dining experience will forever linger in our heart. We can't wait to go back!!!

I rarely eat pizza so it is nice to get a fantastic one when I do. This one hit the jackpot. It was very quiet for a Saturday evening but I assume they do a large carry-out and or delivery business. Call them and get a great pizza.

Didn't order the pizza which is always excellent. Tried other Italian dishes. The wedding soup was the only dish that was very good. All the other dishes were mediocre: chicken parm, lasgna, cheese ravioli, and the osso buco. The waitress was very attentive.

I have been to both restaurants. This one was the white building in Pennachuck Square. We stopped for lunch. Beautiful atmosphere. Servers were nicely dressed and the place spotlessly clean as was the bathroom.I ordered the gyro with lamb which I enjoyed. My husband enjoyed his wrap. Warm crusty bread with served with olive oil. The server was attentive and well trained for a young guy.Great food, great service, great atmosphere. I would go back again. Enjoy.

We had not been to this restaurant since it changed from Florence's to Portofino. We recognized the interior, the Italy scenes painted on the walls--very familiar. We were cheerfully greeted and seated promptly. Our server was attentive, efficient, and took care of everything we asked for. The menu is extensive. Companion's veal saltimbocca was carefully prepared, the pappardelle pasta was homemade and fresh, and the chef did not skimp on the seasonings. My cioppino must have had a pound of seafood, and it, too, was richly seasoned, including generous portions of red pepper flake and garlic. The establishment came up a bit short, however, on three things: 1) both the veal saltimbocca and my seafood were rubbery. We think they were simply overcooked, which is an easy fix; 2) the list of wines by the glass is limited. There are no descriptions of the winery or vintage. Only wines purchased by the bottle have this information. Companion noted that her San Giorgio wine tasted the same as my Chianti. They were generous pours, but not what she wanted; 3) the music in the sound system sounded like an Italian cat fight, not the typical, mellow tunes we hear at other Italian restaurants. Our server relieved us by turning the volume down. There was a speaker right above our table. We could barely hear ourselves talk. In sum, Portofino offers good food, great service, and its shortcomings are fixable. If you live nearby in Merrimack this is a convenient alternative to trucking down to Nashua or up to Manchester for Italian cuisine.
