Did you come to Italy looking for that family, home-cooked meal feel at a restaurant? This is your place. It's an entirely family operation from the cooking to the serving (I think the grandmother cooks, the daughter is the waitress, and the 7-year-old granddaughter brings you the menus) that will give you exactly what you need after spending a day in the mountains. Everything was DELICIOUS. We had minestrone to start with polenta and mushrooms and sausage, polenta, and kraut. We finished with a semifreddo and strudel. I would come back here every night - it was the best meal of our trip. A truly authentic meal in a great setting - a traditional South Tyrolean lodge in the woods.

For pizza, this is the best place in the Val di Non. Your pizza is made to order, cooked in a traditional wood oven and delivered to your table promptly. The selection of toppings is impressive as well.In addition to the pizza, local specialties abound on the menu. There is also a salad bar.La Cantinota is located on Via Roma accross the street from the tourist office. There is ample street parking, especially after 7 p.m. The restaraunt is located in an older building with arched ceilings in a large Tyrolean style "stube." This provides a warm atmosphere, even in winter months. We are local residents near Fondo and we always choose La Cantinota. E sempre proprio perfetto!

After our walk around the lake we were very surprised to see this restaurant open as it had been closed all week. Very picturesque from the outside and we couldn't wait to pop in for a look, and we weren't disappointed. The first impression was a small and very quirky cafe, with a wall dedicated to AC Milan with signed football shirts and a scarf and another wall full of impressionist paintings. But this place is like Dr Who's tardis as it stretches around the corner, up some stairs and into another room. When we first went in, the restaurant was quite empty with only a couple of locals at one table and us at another. We ordered a coffee each and it was brought to us in a minute or so. We sat and enjoyed our coffee and soaked in this lovely building for about half an hour. Time was about 11ish so the staff were getting ready for lunch, so we left and had another walk around the stunning lake.About an hour later we returned and decided to eat here, and was quite surprised to see how busy the place was with both locals and visitors alike. We chose a table in the rear as the decor is again quite diverse with oak carved pillars on every wall.Warning..... the pizza servings are massive ! But they are mouth watering good and you just have to finish ! My wife chose Italian bolognese and she enjoyed that as well.It is table service but you do pay at the till rather than pay the waiter. We stayed until we were ready to leave and the staff are in no hurry to use your table, so a really relaxing meal.Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was for 2 reasons, only one toilet and drinks are expensive, especially soft drinks. All that said 24 euros for lunch sat in a beautiful restaurant on the shore of the picturesque lake. Mind you in first week of march we had no problems eating here but in the summer I would imagine it would be hectic.

Very good typical local food. The polenta is always great and so is the carne salad. Sitting outside gives you a nice view under the shade of beautiful trees. The inside is not wonderful, but ok. A perfect place to start a walk or to end one. Prices are very reasonable. Recommended

A fairly new and modern little coffe shop which sells great ice cream and lovely little cakes. I enjoyed sitting on the terrace, having my tea with a cake and watching the world go by.

My friend in Trento brought my family to here for a lunch, and it was one of the best meal I have had in my 10 day trip in Italy! The restaurant has a beautiful and excellently tended outdoor seating place and all the staff members are so professional and helpful for English speaking guests, like us. Their food is great in both taste and presentation! My daughter tried one of their gelato dessert, and that was also great! After the meal, we promised to come back again soon. They have a great selection of local wine too. It could be little hard to find a place, but please try it, it will pay you with great food and service!

Caastelfondo is not everybody's itinerary but it is worth a little detour. If you go, do visit the church and make a little trip to the "regole di Castelfondo" for a walk. The restaurant is very nice. The food is local, portions abundant and the price more than correct

The Hotel Lago Smeraldo*** is situated in the village of Fondo, Val di Non, in the region Trentino-Alto-Adige. At 1000 mt above the sea-level, the Hotel is surrounded by firs and larches and lies on the banks of a small alpine lake and near the Canyon Rio
After another long and extremely cold walk through canyon rio sass and around the frozen lake this restaurant is a very welcome sight.Had a very enjoyable coffee and panini here whilst watching the locals diving under the ice through the window.Very pleasant staff but waitress engrossed in conversation with her colleague so we had to wait to order.Food and drink very tasty but expensive - 2 coffees and 2 panini's was 18 euros.

Another perfect dinner at this Locanda (see my previous reviews). Standouts this time were a 'creme caramel' with fresh local mushrooms and sweetbreads, a pig cheek braised in beer (incredibly deep flavour), and a pistachio ice-cream. But also delicious were torlelloni (well) filled with local herbs and confit cherry tomatoes, a Guinea fowl with recurrant and a cream of celeriac, and the evergreen chocolate and coffee dessert. It's hard to think of another place in the region that so well tells the story of tradition and locla ingredients, but that at the same time has embraced modernity. The room is charming as ever, service led by signor Danilo in the room is excellent, and both food and wine prices make this place incredible value for money.

We have been fourtunate to be both guests and friends with the owners, Ivano and Antonella, for more than 15 years. The accommodations and meals are simply the best to be found in the Alta Val di Non. Ivano consistently delivers innovative, carefully prepared meals that delight even the most discriminating guests. The dining room is warm and furnished elegantly in the Tyrolean tradition. There is a huge fireplace for the winters and a lovely outside terrace for the summers. Most guest rooms have great views of the Val di Non and Brenta Dolomites. Housekeeping is meticulous. Antonella oversees every detail personally to ensure the total comfort of all guests.Tret is located at the very top of the Val di Non in a very rural setting. International travelers can take comfort in the fact that the owners speak Italian, German, English as well as local dialects. Both Ivano and Antonella have a great knowledge of the local area.Le Ciaspole is conveniently located to take advantage of day trips to Merano, Bolzano and nearby valleys (Val di Sole, Val di Adige, Val di Ultimo, Val Venosta, etc.) Local attractions in Tret include a waterfall (below the village proper) and Lake Tret (above Le Ciaspole).Local families often hold special events at Le Ciaspole (birthday parties, wedding parties, first communions, etc) as Le Ciaspole is equipped with large dining facilities.Tutto quanto e' sempre ottimo!
