Things to do in Tonga
I ordered a chicken burrito and it was like nothing I have ever seen in any Mexican Restaurant anywhere I have been and I lived in Arizona for years and have been to many. A small strip of cooked mystery meat said to be chicken was dwarfed by a huge bundle of white rice wrapped in what seemed to be an Indian style Roti, not a corn tortilla. Yes, it was filling and the addition of generous amounts of the supplied Vietnamese hot sauce made it edible, but all in all it was pretty bad. The place is located ok though a bit off the beaten path and has a pleasant indoor and outdoor seating arrangement. At the time I wondered why there were no other customers at lunch time. I think I now know why. For sure it is not fair to judge a restaurant on one botched dish but that was enough for me. My friend, who is usually a hearty eater, forced himself to complete eating his "burrito" and though he is local and not all that familiar with Mexican food, he thought it was pretty bad too. There are too many good restaurants in Nuku'alofa to bother coming back to this one.
We popped over to Mandala Resort for dinner. They arranged a speedboat pickup for us that met us at the old harbour. Arrival is exciting - the main building has the look of a Bond villain's lair. All surfaces are curved and there's plenty of padded places to perch upon (and padded is often in short supply on islands). The cocktail list is excellent, Whisky Rebellion was a personal favourite - though be warned: the prices turn out to be in Australian dollars, despite the American hosts & the Tongan location. Speaking of hosts, Ben and Lisa are warm and friendly, as are their friendly dogs & Benzini, their well behaved restaurant cat. Food is a three course affair, with an emphasis on vegetables rather than meat (the Swedish chef is vegan). We started with bread, then stuffed zucchini, followed by chicken roulade. The bacon-wrapped rounds of chook were stuffed with feta & sun-dried tomato, and served on garlic mash. The meal highlight was dessert - a pineapple upside-down cake with a clever soursop sorbet flavoured with lemongrass. Food feels like that of a competent home cook, adept at making the most of ingredients that are locally abundant and sustainable.Mandala also have the best wine list I've seen in Vava'u, with a very drinkable NZ Hawkes Bay Chardonnay coming in at sixty Tongan pa'anga. The only surprise was the bill actually being in Australian dollars, converted to Tongan pa'anga, then with stamp duty added... we paid 500 Tongan pa'anga which brought it in as our most expensive meal in Vava'u. While I wouldn't say it was the best food, it was certainly worthwhile as an experience.
it is behind salote road away from the sea and one block down from the australian high comission. Serves curries, sandwiches, salads, ...
Excellent choice. Despite being on a main road, there was no traffic noise noticed. We were made to feel like friends rather than paying guests very quickly by Olini and her Dad Saia. To have the use of the kitchen and laundry really helped. We will return there without hesitation on future visits to Tonga. Saia and Olini are top hosts.

Eat Drink Relax...Tongan Style. Best lil' restaurant in town! Yummy food, good hospitality, great view. We show live sport of any kind, when it's on.
Great spot for hanging out and enjoying the afternoon and evening in Nuku'alofa. Delicious food menu and cocktails on offer and very friendly staff. Far removed from the madness of the Central Business District bars and the dance clubs. Easily the best bar in Tonga.

This restaurant has it all - delicious food, beautiful atmosphere and view and owners who are two of the nicest, friendliest people you will ever meet! The minute we stepped foot off the elevator (3rd story roof top open air - stunning!) we were greeted with such warm enthusiasm by Bob, who owns the place along with his lovely wife Vicki, there was no way we weren't going to eat here! The two of them are extremely passionate about their restaurant and life in general - very wonderful people. To have such hospitality along with absolutely delicious food and an extensive menu is a combination that you don't always find. There is good reason that this restaurant has an excellent rating unsurpassed by any other establishment in Nuku'alofa. Knowing my birthday was in a few days, they presented me with the best chocolate molten lava cake a la mode l have ever had along with the attentive staff all singing me happy birthday - truly a special and memorable evening!Wish we were staying longer just so we could enjoy more meals at this lovely restaurant!Wow dog sitter, right back at you. You were a joy to have, and we loved our conversation. Please keep in touch. I have a feeling you will. You know where to find us, and should you ever wander in here again, you know we will treat like the special person you are. Take care, and we will talk again....Thank you, Bob

Come and visit us for lunch, dinner or sunset drinks on the waterfront in Neiafu on the island of Vava'u in the Kingdom of Tonga.
We had an omelette from the all day menu. Came with toast and jam. Very generous portion with fresh vegetable filling. Good coffee too. Great location right on the water. Can watch the yachts and tenders come in.

I have eaten at this restaurant over the last three years while visiting Vava'u and I have nothing to complain about. I have found the staff to be friendly and helpful. The food is consistently good, and a great selection to choose from, good size portions and I believe is priced well. I have been there for lunches and dinners and will go again the next time I visit. It is on the harbour, so it is nice if you are dining there for lunch.I do recommend you make a booking, as it gets busy especially for dinner. Go and enjoy.Regards,CherieSydney, AustraliaMalo e Lelei,Thank-you for taking time to review us, always a pleasure to have you with us for the last three years and have you again this year!
