Find out what International restaurants to try in Tarapoto. Tarapoto is a commercial hub town in the San Martín Province of the San Martín Region or northern Peru. It is an hour by plane from Lima, in the high jungle plateau to the east of what is known as the selva baja (low jungle). Although Moyobamba is the capital of the region, Tarapoto is the region's largest city and is linked to the Upper Amazon and the historic city of Yurimaguas by a relatively well-maintained transandean highway, paved in 2008-9.

I had nothing but great experiences at Chalet Venezia. As a vegetarian, I am always looking for restaurants that serve vegetables. Unlike Cafe d'Mundo down the street, Chalet Venezia has several salads, and many are vegetarian. My favorite was the Mario Salad, which boasted (I think) garbonzo beans, elote (corn), hearts of palm, lettuce, and a number of other things. It was great, particularly with the homemade balsamic vinaigrette. The Spinach Lasagna was outstanding, creamy, cheese, and loaded with enough spinach to make Popeye's biceps burst. I also tried the quesadilla at the owner's suggestion. It was chock full of vegetables and far better than many anemic quesadillas that one often receives at purely Mexican restaurants. This was really good. I didn't get a chance to try the pizza because the oven collapsed the week prior to my arrival and it took several weeks for a new oven to be built and installed. I was gone before that project had been completed. The service at Chalet Venezia was above and beyond. All of the waiters remembered my name. The manager addressed me directly when I ordered the quesadilla spicy, as he feared that the local peppers would be too hot. They weren;t, but I appreciated the attention and the care for the food and the care for the patrons. Christian, the owner, was always quick to offer suggestions about hikes or his experience in the area. He also owns the French bakery next-door (La Mason du Pan).I would strongly recommend Chalet Venezia for Italian food, certainly for the Spinach Lasagna, for the quesadilla, for the salad, and for the service. In my estimation (as a non-meat-eater), it is likely one of the best restaurants in town, and far, far better than Cafe d'Monde down the street.

Located just off the Plaza de Armas, and next door to Hotel Nilas, this is one of my favorite stops, especially late at night. They always seem to be open late. The staff is friendly, and their aji sauce is one of my favorites in the country.
