Slovenia, wedged between Austria and Italy, has always been proud of its unique heritage. The capital, Ljubljana, is a perfect example of this blend of German, Mediterranean, and Slovenian culture. The old town is a blend of Baroque, Renaissance, and Art Nouveau buildings, watched over by a medieval castle. Cut through the gardens of Tivoli Park to the National Museum of Contemporary History for a history of modern Slovenia, featuring crumbled statues of Stalin and a recreation of a WWI trench.

Vander Restaurant

We decided to eat here having failed to get a table in our chosen restaurant. From the beginning our waiter, and it was only him, was at best unfriendly and unhelpful. We chose a bottle of wine which turned out to be unavailable, but for a few euros more we could have another. When pressed he wouldn't commit on price, but a bottle duly arrived (we didn't ask for it), with a more friendly waiter. Whilst he was pouring, the unfriendly one passed by, saying it was the same price. When it came to ordering food my wife asked if she could stop her potatoes for fries (they were a side dish anyway), only to be told that chef had visualized the dish that way, so take it or leave it basically. So, we then all ordered a burger, 3 cooked the same, 1 not. Some had garnish removed. When they finally arrived, they were at best tepid, and not one of us got what we ordered. Was it worth complaining? Not really, as we wouldn't return anyway. It's your call if you want to eat there, but I certainly wouldn't recommend it!

Perhaps we were just unlucky or perhaps the chef wasn't on top form, but our experience was very disappointing. Our food was not as good as some of the uploaded photos, which I agree look really good. Our starters were decent, but the two mains (risotto and spaghetti) were very small and lacked imagination (we would have ordered that great-looking burger but it wasn't on the menu the night we came). Both dishes had hardly any veg or protein (the spaghetti had a little tofu but the risotto nothing as far as we could see) - they were both mainly carbs. Agree with a previous reviewer from April that the portions were very small and the price very expensive (I don't like to be negative about portion size as it sounds greedy but our mains really were tiny...I heard the waitress advise another table that the portions were small but we had already ordered by that point). Unfortunately we still felt hungry after our meal.I think this restaurant could do better, and because I am a massive fan / supporter of vegan food I would actually give it another go if the price was more reasonable, but for tourists with one night in the city I couldn't endorse this place on our experience, I'm sorry. We are so sorry to hear about your negative experience. We surely would like to apologize for letting you down, believe us when we say, that we are working extremely hard at the moment on few little things which will hopefully bring better experience to future customer in regards to price-quality ratio.Kindest regards.

Judging by the clientele (which were all Americans), this is a place hotels send guests to when they ask for an authentic Slovenian meal. Being a descendant of Slovenian grandparents, I was very disappointed. My husband ordered a sirloin steak, which was fine. I ordered the goulash and buckwheat mush which didn't taste anything like the delicious food my grandma used to make. I was hoping to be transported back to my childhood through food, but wasn't. Our waiter tried too hard to impress and instead came off as bossy and a know-it-all. The gratis schnapps at the end of the meal couldn't overcome the mediocre experience.Mr. Traveler,We are dissapointed to hear, we didn't cook like your grandmother. Our waiter saw, you didn't get food as expected, so he tried his best... Our food is traditional sLOVEnian, but with a modern twist. If you ever come back to sLOVEnia, you are welcome to teach some reciepe, like your grandmother usec to cook. Thank you for constructive review, we do want to improve every day. :)

The maître d’ convinced Dimitri that we both needed to order the 5-course menu (€50 x 2) and so we did. Our server was exceptionally good. She (I think her name was Marja) was a natural even though she was a student in an entirely different field. Atelje made sure that Dimitri and I had different dishes so we could taste everything. The food was beautifully presented and each dish was delicious. Marja made sure that we understood what we were eating and where it came from. She even gave us some history; it was an exceptionally fun meal. We drank 9 different wines with our meal and explained the varietal and where it came from . Even with 9 glasses of different wines, our total bill was €138,30—a bargain. Our first plates were (i) trout, trout roe, prosciutto cubes and pumpkin seed oil and (ii) asparagus tartar, ramson (wild garlic) oil and fresh curd. Our second plates were (i) shrimp, burnt cucumber green sauce with olive oil, and (ii) kohlrabi, white asparagus, hollandaise sauce with chicory, and (ii) cuttlefish, veal sweetbread, almonds and x.o. sauce. Our third plates were (i) sea bass, parsley root puree, smoked mussels and whey, and (ii) lamb, fennel, fava beans, tarragon oil, lamb stock. Our fourth plates were both rhubarb, chamomile ice cream and black tea gel. For dessert we both had sourdough ice cream, salted granola, coffee kombucha ice cream. We highly recommend this restaurant.
