This small pleasant space operates as a different restaurant (Bernie's) for breakfast and lunch. it changes staff and menu for dinner, and has an intriguing gluten free menu. When I found the red curry dish too spicy hot for my taste, they wisked it away & replaced it with a milder yellow curry version that was just perfect. All of our meals were good & the chocolate-hazelnut cheesecake for dessert was outstanding.
The barn that houses The Barn at Smith Farm restaurant was recently renovated and still retains the fresh scent of freshly cut timber. The decor is simple, but suitable for this restaurant with some clever details such as the lighting above the bar. It was seat yourself and there were several tables open so no need for a reservation. The menu was not as extensive as some restaurants, but there were several options for entrees. Before dinner was ordered we had a round of drinks - a glass of the house white wine, a heavy dark ale (the name escapes me), and a glass of ginger ale. The house white wine was dry and crisp ... just how I like it. My partner had the heavy dark ale and enjoyed it so much he ordered a second round. For dinner our party opted for the bourbon braised steak tips with mashed potatoes and greens, the vegetarian lasagna which came with an ample portion of freshly baked bread, and lastly the fried chicken dinner with garlic mashed potatoes and greens. We all enjoyed our meals intensely. The waitstaff was friendly and helpful and we enjoyed some lighthearted banter with them. We declined dessert, but the thought of a brownie sundae was mighty tempting ... maybe next time. There is a deck for outside dining when permitted by weather overlooking a pond. On the side of the room where we were seated our view overlooked a quirky garden complete with a giant rooster sculpture, several ducks wandering about or swimming in their small pool, a haphazard garden, and also spied at least two spirited goats. There was a lot to take in, but it strangely was very appealing. The bill for our three entrees and beverages (we declined appetizers, salads, and dessert) was $103 before the tip. It was a bit expensive for a barn dining experience, but ultimately the food won out and it was worth every penny. We shall return ....

This is a restaurant we visit everytime we're in Portland. The food is absolutely excellent, the selection varied, with a wine selection that should satify everyone (see note further, however). The wait staff makes this a pleasant to visit here; they are extremely nice and occasionally humorous. The large open kitchen lets you see how your food is prepared. The restaurant can be a bit noisy (always had a feeling the building was originally a warehouse or factory). We have enjoyed the raw clams, hallibut, and steaks. Two notes:1, when you order medium rare meat, it is truly medium rare (cold in the center); and 2, if you like Malbac wine, be careful in selecting it as it appears to be a non-Agentinian grape-not Mendoza, thus not as hearty or full-bodied as one should expect.
