Hard to know how to rate this - 4 for the full pub experience, but 3 perhaps for quality of food.We have been to the Bistro inside the historical Surveyor General Inn several times over the years, and twice this week. The service - in the bistro and the bar is friendly and efficient, and the spaces comfortable of the type of establishment it is.The food is good though on the first night my duck was a little dry, and on the second night a pretty large number of menu items were not available. It was nice, though, to see some food items different from the usual pub fare.

We recently visited the Southern Highlands with two other couples, and this restaurant proved a delightful find. The staff were warm and inviting, and happy to have a chat about their restaurant and the local area. The contemporary ambience of the space is cosy, yet tasteful and restrained. We our evening with a tartare snack which set the tone for the evening. This delicious morsel was designed to start the taste buds humming and it was met with approval from our entire party! I ordered the chowder for my entree, and the presentation was impressive and the quality outstanding. My only complaint is that it was a very large serving! For my main meal I indulged in the 36 hour wagyu beef cheek, whilst my partner had the Black Angus. Both were superb, and the beef cheek was melt in the mouth as you would expect. Overall we had a wonderful experience at Birch and wouldn't hesitate recommending it if you are after quality food served in an original and inventive manner. We hope to be back one day in the not too distant future.
