Important: Go down the narrow side street where you'll see a yellow sign with å°ãã(Kooike). There is also a shop on the main street with the same name but this is not the original one and much less interesting.It almost feels like walking into an old small German restaurant when you see the thick door on the inside with its decorated glass. Instead you'll find a great value local Japanese curry place that also serves Katsudon ã«ã丼 (fried pork with egg on rice). For 900-1000Yen you get an extra big portion of pork or chicken curry served in a delicious old-fashioned environment. Staff is friendly and helpful. Just point to what you want and if that doesn't work some other customer will soon jump up to help you. They also sell some local products and have some interesting memorabilia on the walls.

We came upon this place, opened the door and were captivated by the quaintness of the place and the wonderful aroma. The place only sits about 12 people in an upstairs loft above the kitchenThe food is freshly prepared and the flavours are delicious. We ordered the curry of the day which was a chicken curry and the chicken kabobs. The food was served with a variety of fresh and marinated vegetables and cumin flavored rice.We had Turkish beer and white wine. The owners - cooks spoke English well enough that we had a great conversation. One of the highlights of our visit to Hakodate.
