The name is preserved from antiquity and is derived from the Greek χαλκός (copper, bronze), though there is no trace of any mines in the area. In the late Middle Ages, it was known as Negropont(e), an Italian name that has also been applied to the entire island of Euboea.

I really enjoyed having my snack and coffee in Le Petit Savoureux. It's the most delicate place in Chalkida with high-quality snacks and coffee. My kids had to choose among a wide variety of chocolates and they loved it. The owner pays attention to every detail in his store where every object has a story to tell.

We visited this restaurant twice within our sort visit in Chalkida. The food is amazing and the prices reasonable. The stuff very polite and helpful! We tried the gourounaki in wrapped pita, the pork gyros in wrapped pita, chicken souvlaki, fried potatoes and haloumi cheese. I recommend all of them! The haloumi as a starter is very tasty and is served with tomatoes and a bit of basil sauce. The meat dishes where all nicely cooked and tasty.
