Zur Krone

In a sleepy suburb of a small spa town, you wouldn't expect to find absolutely first class cooking and a wonderful wine list. But that's exactly your reward for a half hour stroll along the river northwards out of nearby Bad Krozingen. The shady, cobbled courtyard means you can eat outside even on a blisteringly hot day such as we experienced this September. Traditional local dishes such as Kasespatzle and Rahmtopfle are presented with unusual finesse and the owners are knowledgeable about their wine list - naturally, in this prime wine producing area of Germany. One of the best meals we've had in the area.

We went there on a Thursday evening. It was a very hot summer day and perfect for drinking a beer and for eating something. We were surprised how crowded it was - felt like a Friday or Saturday!! Despite long waiting time we enjoyed it a lot. Staff was friendly and prices fair. We will go there again also because of the parc in front of it.

I stayed at this hotel and when I did a search, I was surprised to find the restaurant in the hotel was the highest rated in town. I had dinner there and it was awesome. It was there price fix menu and had a wonderful shrimp appetizer and monk fish entrée. It was incredible. Well worth the stop if you are in the area.

Lorenz-Straussi

Freiburg has a great tradition for the Straussi experience and we were recommended the Lorenz by a local who claimed that it was one of the best. The recommendation was absolutely accurate. The venue is wonderful. The outdoor eating is venued in a courtyard area which has its own aviary! The old barns have been converted into the indoor dining space. They are amazing as the walls are totally covered with mirrors. The food is excellent. The menu is extensive, which does not follow the real Staussi philosophy but it does mean that you can keep returning and always try something new. Vegetarian options are many and varied. I had the asparagus in a spinach pancake with a cream sauce. Absolutely delicious, filling and still a light dish. The staff are great and helpful. The only down side to the staussi is that it can be difficult to get a table. They do not have a booking system. We went on a Sunday and arrived 5 minutes after opening time. By then the place (which is vast) was totally full. I suggest that either you come at opening time or about an hour an a half after as the first diners will be leaving.I hope you enjoy the place as much as we did.

The Eden hotel restaurant is a decent establishment serving rather large portions of traditional food. I had the pumpkin soup with ginger and coconut and the veal saltimbocca. It was not particularly sophisticated, it tends to be on the salty side and a little bit overcooked. However there is nothing terribly wrong with the food, the atmosphere is pleasant and the waiting staff are very friendly and professional. The wine selection is large and interesting, including smaller volumes corresponding to a third of a bottle (2 glasses, 250 mL). The prices are quite moderate considering the generous amount of food served.

Quite a few of the places in Bad Krozingen are a bit expensive but this place was excellent value. We sat outside, next to a small, trickling stream channel, under a canopy, and ate wonderful schnitzel and drank good local wine, for a good price. Quiet, off the main street, not at all pretentious, lots of locals eating there - what more do you want?

A friend and I dined here in September, after a long drive from Calais. It was quaint, small and friendly. The steaks were very well cooked, high quality and great value. Everything is in German, they don't speak English, but that's not a problem. You don't expect English in a typical German village.Food was lovely, good value and served with a smile - and an excellent local German beer. Happy customers!

Storchen Restaurant Hotel

Having had one or two disappointing experiences with Michelin-starred restaurants, we went to this one with an open mind. We needn't have worried though as it was delicious from start to finish. The restaurant is part of a 'gasthof' which is situated in a small village. They do have a pretty little garden but, unfortunately, the weather was wet and cool when we went.We opted for their set menu and asked for wine recommendations which we enjoyed and which complimented the food well. It is quite a small restaurant, and the atmosphere was very convivial. Attractive paintings, lots of light-coloured wood and white linen make the restaurant light and airy. Service was efficient and cheerful. As can be expected at a Michelin-star restaurant, this was not a cheap meal, but worth every penny. A lot of hard work and imagination had gone into the preparation of the delightfully fresh ingredients. The food was beautifully presented with lots of colour, texture and flavour, and we made the most of our three-hour dining experience taking in and enjoying everything going on around us. We would definitely go back, perhaps next time for a lovely sunny lunch in their garden.

Visited Lowen which is situated in the Basler Straße on our last night as we wanted something light to eat. As it was threatening rain we ate inside and it is a very modern style restaurant inside. We both had Tagliatelle with Salmon, along with a couple of glasses of local red wine. Finishing with a tea and coffee, a very reasonable 29 euros. We would definitely return.
