I had spent two weeks in Brittany and was on my way home, stopping in Boulogne Sur Mer overnight. The fact that I stumbled across far and away the best meal I ate on the whole trip made for a very happy end to my holiday.I have been to Boulogne many times and have usually spent evenings in the old town. However, this was for the pleasant environment rather than the food. Until this trip, I had always found it difficult to find anything outstanding AND within my modest budget. The main street of the old town is crammed with restaurants but, once you start looking closely, they all appear to be clones with strikingly similar menus, prices and styles. There is a much more salubrious restaurant up near the ramparts but it is beyond my means in terms of cost.On this occasion, my eye was caught by a chalk board which stood next to a doorway and announced that the establishment in question specialises in artisan beers and prides itself on all menu items being freshly made inhouse. These seemed like two very good arguments for giving L'etoile des mers a try.It was a good decision. The restaurant, unlike all the others, has no pavement area and can not be described as a brasserie. It is on the first floor, housed in a series of tastefully furnished and decorated rooms which, had I encountered them in England, I would have called Georgian - sash winows, high ceilings etc. Light choral music was playing softly. It felt decidedly more upmarket than the alternative venues below without being stuffy or austere.Indeed, the staff were attentive, welcoming and friendly. The menu was not extensive but, even so, I found it hard to choose between the mouthwatering dishes on offer. In the event, I chose a shrimp and cheese tart, a sort of Northern French/Belgian seafood stew and a Tiramisu made with gingerbread and fresh figs. I drank a bottle of artisan beer and followed the meal with a coffee.Every element of that meal was perfect. The starter and desert, especially, were exquisite. It was one of those meals where you sit and savour every aspect, feeling rather pleased with yourself for having chosen so well. The bill, when it came, was no more than I would have spent in one of the many brasseries along the main drag, which seemed like a bargain. The friendly waitress told me that the restaurant had only been open for two months and that, exactly as I had felt, their idea was that the old town was full of reasonable restaurants but nothing that stood out from the crowd so they decided to try something different.I would urge anyone eating in Boulogne to try this restaurant and I wish L'etiole des mers the success that, based on my experience, they richly deserve.

We absolutely liked the service, the attention we got and the suggested wines. Must compliment wine waitress that didn't push the most expensive bottle upon us but was able to detect our moods and tastes and suggest accordingly. Her white burgundy suggestion was a treat! The food was very good, yet some was hit and go.Superb langoustines but bland foie gras. Excellent lam, but turbot without too much taste (and too much hollandaise sauce), the asparagus (white) were not peeled well and you couldn't cut them with fish knife. Most disspointing was a dover sole that was cooked/steamed with olive oil, looked grey and tasteless. Would have preferred classical panbaked "sole meunière".Might go again though, to see if it's constant or only on very busy evenings.

The staff and food are excellent. We have donât speak French and the waiter had limited English, but enough to explain the menu. Our Google translate didnât work because the menu is handwritten on a blackboard! Wonderful food and drinks. The portions are large. We said next time we would skip the large starters and just go for a main, and maybe a desert. Highly recommended.

The only place we could find in Wimereux that would let us buy a coffee without having a sit-down meal with it. Also one of the few places that helped us with our attempts at French rather than stuffily switching to English. So a rare find! Good strong coffee with fast, straightforward service.

My wife and I ate there on Saturday evening. As with all restaurants in Wimereux, you need to book. The set menu was good but a little short so I added oysters, which were huge, and the lobster risotto with squid ink. This was very good.My wife had scorpion fish. The brasserie menu is still cooked in a Michelin starred kitchen. The only negative was that we ordered a carafe of wine and they brought out an empty carafe and proceeded to decant from a 1.5l bottle at the table.Maybe we were âwine shamedâ for not ordering a bottle. The food and service were very good but the portions not that large.Great for â¬100 though in the seafront.
