Home to the oldest university in Germany, Heidelberg was hit hard during 17th-century wars and rebuilt in the 18th century with baroque buildings. For a pleasant walk, stroll through the historic city center's Gothic streets. Be sure to take in Heidelberg Castle, the symbolic heart of the city; Alte Brucke, a beautiful 18th-century bridge; and the Student Jail. Built as long ago as the 16th century, it was used to keep mischievous students off the streets for three days to a month at a time. And they say Penn State is the number-one party school!

Lovely setting and greatvfood. Problem is: which one will you have? It is such a great menu, so fantastic ideas. Make sure you get the spätzle - they were almost better than the schnitzel...

After doing the Heidelberg Castle and Konigstuhl we were a little hungry and thirsty. Wandering away from the main Platz (and all the touristy stuff there) we found this place on the street near the river. The menu had a bunch of tapas, similar to what one might find in Spain. A glass of wine and some bier rounded out the offerings. The atmosphere was niceâ¦.somewhat spoiled by what I think were the owners children (or their friends children) that were making quite a ruckus in the restaurant and restroom. My parents would have tanned my hide if I behaved like that. Despite the noise we enjoyed our meal. Recommended.

Beautifully situated between the meadow and orchards south of the Koenigstuhl mountain. We went there one evening to escape this summers heat and immediately fell in love with the restaurant. We took our aperitifs outside at a table overlooking a small lawn and watched two billy goats on the other side of the fence lunging for the apples hanging of a tree. Can it get any more bucolic ?Inside, the table was prepared and we a had a choice of ordering either a vegetarian or meat tasting menue .The service was knowledgeable and very friendly and every course was absolute delectable and refreshingly different. And regional to boot !A few times, the chef came over in person to explain the dishes. We were also invited to take a few courses at a special table next to the cooking area, another nice touch. The accompanying wines were perfectly wells suited and the sommeliere described every one of them . An unusual , very nice touch was the non-alcoholic option : a different drink for evey course ; homemade meonades and tea infusions to match the courses. I have never seen anything like that before. The only drawback was a 30 minutes wait for the bill, as everything had to be added manually due to a glitch in their system. Timely information about the hiccup and complimentary glass of whatever would have soothed the wait . But it was definetely a memorable evening for our party of four and we vowed to return. And getting a bit more prosaic now : Absolutly great value for money !
