We hadnât realised that the different sections all had different menus. We could oversee a different section from the wine bar area and got a lot of food envy! What we had was tasty and it was good to see local options as well as international options. The cocktails need more description for those outside the cocktail bar and unable to ask the staff. We took a punt on a couple and they werenât that nice. I asked the waiter to ask the cocktail experts for something very sweet that didnât really taste of alcohol. Have done this in multiple places and got absolutely delicious results. He basically talked me into something else off the menu which was undrinkable. We gave up and went to another bar. Would be 3* but the very funky decor added a star!

Restaurant Alacarte is situated in the northern wing of the Prinsenhof. Once the sleeping quarters of this royal abode, these rooms now accommodate a contemporary restaurant offering an exciting combination of historical elements in a modern setting. With
We had the most expensive 7 stage menu, and expected more considering pricing, venue and service which was all high end. Food was well crafted with sometimes very original shapes and themes, but the taste of most stages wasn't one of delight or a pleasant surprise unfortunately. Most stages tasted weak, or too salt, or too smokey, or too bitter, or just awkwardish. There might have been made an attempt to work with pure tastes only, but it failed. Btw, the main dish couldn't be recognized from appetizers etc by size, too small. We dine in top notch restaurants several times a year, also abroad, but this must have been the only below par experience taste-wise.

I dined with two friends who are big fans of this restaurant. Between their rave reviews and the 6-month plus waiting list, I was expecting something pretty mind-blowing. Maybe those heightened expectations were the source of my disappointment. First off, I am not a fan of the whole bread/beverage self-serve approach. It is fine for a low-priced cafeteria, but when youâre paying around 80+ Euros per head, I would like someone to serve me so that I can focus on my dinner companions. Just a preference, of course. I could have overlooked this preference had the food wowed me. But it did not. While some of the flavors were definitely unique, I found them neither nuanced nor delightful. Rather, I found them overplayed and heavy on the palate. I also didnât find the ingredients outstanding. Iâm a fan of the small restaurant and verrassingsmenu concept. But given the price point and the other outstanding dining options in Groningen, I wouldnât go back for a second meal.
