Best French food near Saint-Malo, Brittany, France

May 4, 2020 Jeremy Dunfee

Reviews on French food in Saint-Malo, Brittany, France. Saint-Malo, originally built as a walled citadel guarding the mouth of the Rance river, was for centuries home to feared pirates. They’ve all gone to Davy Jones’ Locker, though, and now it’s Brittany’s most-visited city. Walk the bustling streets of the reconstructed old city and the vast beaches, making sure to stop at the Grande Porte, Porte St-Vincent, the town’s castle with its Musée de la Ville and the Grand Aquarium.

We chose to go to Millesime primarily based on other reviews. It has a bright and busy ambience even though it is on the small and therefore cramped side. The menu isn't very extensive - we chose the pave of beef and the duck. The pave was comfortably on the medium side of medium-rare and the duck was nothing remarkable, so we were left with a degree of disappointment. It seemed that everyone had been booked in at 19.30 (that was the only slot offered when I booked online) and it was nearly an hour before any food popped up. We were also surprised when the party of four men next to us left, as they extracted two dogs from under their table. To be fair, they had been totally invisible, but it's a rare happening these days.To clarify your criticism I would like to criticize you too, because we have two services, one around 19:30 and the other towards 21h15 and you forget to say that you had the dishes later because you have taken an aperitif and that in France we wait for the end of the aperitif To bring the first dishes... To finish you criticize me for accepting customers with their dogs, I think I dream with so much nonsense...

We discovered Le Tournesol today. Delighted to see the reviews on Tripadvisor concur, that we hit upon a real gem.It was busy, yet they had one table free.(We were worried, as they asked if we had a reservation, which we didn’t - so would recommend booking in advance). The interior is quite quirky, the staff efficient and helpful. We both had delicious galettes. One with ham, potatoes, blue cheese accompanied with green salad, the other - goats cheese, apples, smoked bacon, honey and accompanied with goats cheese ice cream.Bother packed with flavour, very filling.Would thoroughly recommend and will definitely return.

Unless you are French do not bother. I have just left this restaurant that is full of excuses. No customer service. Very hot in temperature. We waited for over 2.5 hours in total. The lady in charge made up reasons and excuses for their inefficiency. It is apparently a big deal to serve 2 bowls of ice cream for kids. Over rated food. Not nice and slow staff. Disgusting attitude. Tried to make it my fault as wanted to ask my husband which desert he wanted so that warranted an extra hour of waiting. There are better places that are not b*tchy. Hugely disappointed!

Oh dear, what a disappointment. We were on the last night of our summer stay in France and we booked this restaurant for dinner because of the TripAdvisor ratings. We ordered from their daily selection board, both starting with langustines and then fillet steak for main. The langustines were clearly past their best and in our opinion had been frozen at some point in their existence. We expressed our disappointment only to be told by the waitress that if we wanted top quality langustines they would have been a lot more expensive.... Hmmm, in retrospect that should have been enough of a signal for us to leave, but we persevered. The fillet steak was actually not bad, not much taste and very small but ok. However it came sprinkled with crisps and a side dish which purported to be mashed potato, on face it was like a combination of veloute and baby rice and completely tasteless, again sprinkled with crisps, really weird. We ordered a bottle of Saumur red, which one would not have paid more than 5 euros for in the supermarket but this example was 29 euros at the table. When the bill came I would have expected an adjustment as we were clearly not happy, but no, we were expected to pay full price. I refused and eventually they took off the cost of one portion of the langustines. Overall, a very poor experience and we left disappointed and still hungry. At the end of the day, this restaurant is just another of the tourist trap types that doesn't expect to see the same people come back for more than one night, it's just a revenue generator for the owners and shareholders. We visit St Malo every year and the best restaurants we have found have always been outside of the old town, my advice would be avoid these obvious tourist traps in the old town.

Wonderful spot that I hope becomes a St Malo institution. Had the menu with the duck 2 ways, ostrich main, and decadent chocolate dessert with coconut ice cream. Service was attentive, and the atmosphere intimate with a small fire in the fireplace. The only drawback was not the restaurant's fault. An out of control child that 4 adults could not contain. Please please please ... if you have young children, please find a child-oriented spot on the main road.

We had a quick lunch in this place that also sells most of its interior (We saw a guy leaving with 2 chairs). An enthusiastic waiter welcomed us very warmly and explained the available dishes. My wife took the signature salad (the one with duck) and I had one of the best quiches I ever had in my life, with chicken and tarragon. Both dishes were delicious and extremely affordable for the quality we've got.

We have enjoyed Sunday lunch here for the last 5 weeks. EVERYTHING is excellent! We have tried the tourtes, several kinds of Brushetta, salade, plat du jour of beef, brandade, porc, or seafood, whatever has been offered. For dessert we have enjoyed the chocolate hazlenut cake, strawberry cake, lemon cake, and the bretagne cake with red fruits. Everything is homemade and is outstanding. The ambiance, location on the Place de Legume, the owner, and servers are wonderful, friendly, and polite. We will miss them all winter and already look forward to seeing them and eating the delicious food again next spring.

There is a reason that this restaurant gets 98 percent excellent reviews. It is small and quiet with a casual and pleasant ambiance. The service is very good and provided with a smile. The menu is limited but of high quality. We ordered two different fish dishes. Both were great. The fish was fresh and the preparation was simple yet flavorful. The bread was fantastic as was the wine. Come see for yourself. You won’t be disappointed.

Due to the reviews we expected a lot from this place. In retrospect we realize: some things were good, many things were not. Both appetizers were disappointing, the ravioli watery, the beetroots close to tasteless. Of two times calf one was massively tough. The pre-ordered dessert was sold out at the end. Conclusion: disappointing.Dear Francis, First of all thank you for your review. Your remarks imply an answer from us.The ravioli (which are 3) are not "watery". They came on plate with a celery water wich is a full part of the receipe. It's a shame that you didn't undersand that as it is written on the menu. The beetroot may not been your taste but how could be a beetroot tasteless ! It's marinated into red wine sauce and comes on plate with sour cream spum, smoked duckling breast, wild peppers mix and fines herbs ! Maybe the beetroot wasn't what you expected as you asked our waitress many times "what is a beetroot ?" ! I'm also really suprised about one the calf beeing "tough" as both of your pieces comes from the same animal. Nevertheless you didnt asked us for another one we would had been pleased to prepare again especially for you. Finally, again, we aplogogize that the chocolate dessert you pre-order wasnt avaiblable but I personnaly decided to don't serve it as it didn't meet the quality level that I impose on kitchens.

Hmm. What to say? The hotel is indeed charming and in a lovely position on the sea front. The terrace is well positioned and popular. But. Half hearted weary check in. Had to climb over discarded mattresses and linens to get to our (admittedly nice) room. What spoils it is the service on the terrace. Off hand. Rude. Slow. Not a thank you to be had. For the first time in 10 days on France we felt unwelcome. And it is more than 2km walk into town. Not the 1 the hotel claims. So bear that in mind. On the whole, disappointing. Look elsewhere. Dear Mister curryFirst of all, thank you to take your time to give us your impression, we will appreciate that you told us when you checked out, about the check in, if you saw the linens on the floor, it's because you arrive in advance and we gave you the key before the check in time, and we don't put on the floor the mattress. In the restaurant I'm really disappointed if you get this feeling our team try to do the best to satisfy all of our guests. And to finish, when you ask how far is the old city, we are speaking in time and not in km, the distance is about 20 minutes walking it depends the sense of the windBest regardsAnne
