It seems that this restaurant is popular with both locals and tourists. It takes reservations but once again, we walked up at 7:00 pm and they found us a table. Gallette (buckwheat savoury crepe), plat du jour (fish gratin with vegetables) a green salad to share, a bottle of red wine and coffee for under E50. The food was very tasty, the waitress was just about run off her feet attending to the full restaurant but she still stayed cheerful.

I visited this restaurant with 30 friends aged 40-85 on a busy Saturday night. I have eaten in restaurants all over the world, and this ranks amongst the most unusual. Crucially, the food was good, but the overall experience will not be to everyone's taste. Here is my usual, balanced review and top tips. Here's what we liked:The food was good and that has to be the main thing about a night in a restaurant. I had lamb hotpot, and the meat was tender and the vegetables full of flavour. Not everyone in our large party loved their meal, but keeping 30 people happy is a very difficult task. The service was quick, the wine tasty and as there were not only 30 of us, but also other diners, all of whom sat down for the first sitting within half an hour, I was amazed that the kitchen coped well. It's also worth mentioning that the meal wasn't expensive. Here's what we didn't like / what others might not like and the bizarre bits:The name of the restaurant translates into 'Granny's kitchen'. The restaurant is long and narrow, with football or rugby shirts hanging from various washing lines across the ceiling. The waiters are dressed in Crocs, housecoats and black berets - British readers: think Mrs. Brown (from Mrs. Brown's Boys) with a beret instead of a wig. Very strange! We couldn't work out the significance of the rugby/football shirts at all.The lighting was like Saturday Night Fever and once the restaurant filled up the music was also turned up. The older members of our party enjoyed the French music from the '50s and '60s, but found it too loud to make conversation comfortable when combined with the noise of chatter from the diners. The menus are stuck into the front pages of 1970s annuals, so once you have chosen your food you have some entertainment. However, the menus are a nightmare unless you are a native French speaker. I speak fluent French and still struggled to understand them as they include colloquialisms and expressions native to the region and duck was written as 'quack quack'. My top tips are:Go if you have a native French speaker to translate the challenging menu and if you like a quirky, unusual dining experience. If you prefer something more mainstream, go somewhere else.

Cuisine traditionnel et française réalisée à partir de produits frais. Accueil et ambiance chaleureuse.
Dish arrived that we didn't order. Owner was rude and became very aggressive. Resulting disagreement over the bill became very unpleasant and spoilt our stay in La Rochelle. Recommend avoid.

New restaurant with great views from first floor over the big yacht harbour and aquarium. The Michelin Star trained chef, Antoine Le Baron, presented some outstanding dishes, all beautifully cooked and presented. The welcome and service from the restauranteur Yves Minot and Pauline was very good. An excellent evening.

This very nice restaurant is a local one situated a few minutes away from where I live, and is open mostly at lunch time. I had lunch there for the first time and got to be soooooo happy! The food is fantastic, and the cook and waitresses are so nice with customers. They really take care of you and wanna make you feel at ease. Two menus were possible:⢠main dish + dessert or first plate + main dish, for 12,50â¬.⢠first plate + main dish + dessert for 15â¬.The menus are written on the wall, it changes everyday as the food is always fresh and prepared every morning. So good, healthy, tasty, away form touristic locations, it is hugely worthing it.If you are looking for what's local, cheap and of real good quality, this is where you have to eat!Merci infiniment de votre gentil message...

La Rochelle is a fascinating place to wonder round, lots of interesting architecture. But feeling footsore and only wanting a light lunch we came upon Cafe Coulisses.Just what we were looking for. I had a croque monsieur with a very nice glass of rose and my husband an omelette. We both enjoyed our meals and the service was efficient and friendly.

My guess is everyone likes them, especially kids. Ate lunch there with 3 kids below 5 yrs old, they basically licked their plates clean. Service was attentive and patient with our large group of which only 2 adults spoke French. They made the main course pancakes for the kids with wheat instead of buckwheat at our request, and since 3 of us ordered a set menu we got a whole bottle of cider instead of singles glasses. Nice touch. We will probably go back during our holiday.

This is quite a well regarded restaurant in town so we went with high expectations, and were not disappointed. The service was very professional and attentive, and the restaurant clean and tidy. The food was amazing, the Chef has obviously had formal training as it is highlighted in the tastes and presentations of the dishes. We will be back for sure.

Been there table of 7, 3 adults, 4 children.Sat outside and it was perfect. The owner is very friendly (in a French way of being friendly) and the food was delicious. Wine selection is decent. Definitely a spot you would consider if you want to avoid crowded areas of la rochelle.
