This is something you don’t expect in a city where traditional Japanese seafood is dominant all over in northern Kyoto. On a hillside overlooking Maizuru Bay hidden away from the city centre is this café restaurant Honobono-ya.Their food is genuine French and the menu options are very limited; you enjoy what they offer. The kitchen prepares the day’s dishes all based on what are available on that very day. The lunch ranges from about US$20 to US$40. More exotic lunch ranges fromUS$40 to US$60. The dinner is more expensive from US$40 to US$100. These prices do not include alcohol. Reservation is recommended for lunch and is required for dinner. For lunch we opted for the least expensive option with beef stew, but it was still very nicely presented and tasty. The service was very good.We learned that this restaurant has been in operation since 2002 and currently it is with a well-recognized Japanese chef with his French cuisine experience ranging from restaurants in southern France to a large resort hotel in Japan, plus his own restaurant. The most valuable information we learned about this restaurant is that the support staff members are all with some form of mental disabilities. In fact the whole complex, which includes this restaurant and a small hotel, is a non-profit centre for giving a mentally handicapped people some forms of job experiences for their future independent life possibilities.Access to this restaurant is limited; you have to drive or a get a cab ride. However, it’s worth the effort. Enjoy a great meal knowing you are not only eating but also contributing to a good cause.
This restaurant is located in a not-so-attractive area not far away from the port facilities of Maizuru. But be assured that it doesn’t mean it is in a scary or a dangerous area.Their food is Mediterranean. The menu was reasonably extensive with lots of pasta dishes. The wine list looked quite good. We enjoyed pasta and beef dishes with some house red. The food and service were quite good, and we were very happy to enjoy the quiet evening. While we were eating we had nobody else but one person came in later. It was almost too quiet and we wondered why as the restaurant had such good foods. Well, it was after all a weekday evening.

ランチのメインディッシュが、ブリの照り焼きと宮崎豚のステーキと両方を楽しみました。パスタも美味しいが、濃厚な味付けが良い。
