Detours

Pau is not exactly on the tourist trail for many English speaking travellers. But after finding this gem of a restaurants maybe more travellers should detour to Pau to try "Detours". My partner and I recently found ourselves in Pau on our way through to Bordeaux. We did not consult our usual source of Tripadvisor reviews and thought we would explore the local scene unaided. We looked at the menus of many of the restaurants in the old quarter but nothing really grabbed our attention. Walking down a street back to our accommodation we came across a small restaurant and were instantly interested in all the dishes listed for the day on the menu. We asked whether a table was available and were offered a choice of internal or external dining by a delightful lady with impeccable English who we found out later was actually French, The menu is not extensive and is changed daily to reflect seasonal and market produce. The dishes that we ordered were thoughtfully cooked and presented, and tasted wonderful. Clearly the young couple who own Detours are passionate about their product. The restaurant has only been opened for a few months but already it is showing a promise that will make it one of the best in Pau. So make sure you Detour!

We were guided here by a combination of Google, Tripadvisor and other reviews (although interestingly, our hotelier said that Lonely Planet is by fay the most independent). It's slightly off the beaten track but was almost full throughout the Friday evening we were there, in September. It's a slightly unconventional menu: starters of fig with goats cheese and mains of squid with berlotti beans had us reaching for the translator app. But they - and the crab starter and the braised beef main - were delicious. And a really welcome change from the same old stuff. And the staff were a welcome change, too... interested, engaged and informed, even to the extent of making it a personal mission to find us a taxi! The menu looks slightly pricey - with mains around 20-24 euros - but the 'formule' means that you get 2 courses of terrific food for 28 euros: and they threw in a gorgeous additional 'pre-starter' of home made terrine for free.Add to that a really decent bottle of Graves for 22euros and you have a really interesting, delicious, carefully devised and executed meal for two for under 90 euros. Brilliant: I wish we had a place like this in Teddington, London.

We discovered this restaurant a block away from where we live (boulevard des Pyrénées in Pau) and it was a nice surprise. The dishes were fresh and tasty. We really enjoyed the aspargus soup wiht an egg (oeuf mollet). The main dish was a fish (I forgot the name) with some chorizo, that was a nice combination. The financier as a dessert was also delicious. We recommand it!

The restaurant "Le Canard Royal" (The Royal Duck) offers original, sophisticated and gourmet dishes based on French South West products. Probably the best place in Pau to discover authentic regional products and unique recipes created by our talented chef

If you favor duck, this is your place. Nearly every dish is centered on duck, contains duck, or is duck. All are excellent, with servers and managers who are courteous, attentive, and extremely helpful, even to those not fluent in French. Mine was simply the best serving of Magret de Canard I have ever had.

Fast and high quality restaurant.Original and classical dishes (from south-west of France receipes )New owners since August 2016 relooked restaurant, Experienced chef and very friendly waitress.

We selected L'Opera mainly because it is very close to our hotel. We certainly lucked out! We were greeted warmly by the person who turned out to be our server. She was knowledgeable, friendly, and always available, despite the ever-increasing number of patrons. As with a number of similar restaurants, there is a limited number of selections, in this case two in every category (appetizer, entree, dessert). The two of use decided to differ completely, so were able to taste every selection in each course. There were no disappointments! Wines were all from the region, and very reasonably priced. Indeed, the entire evening was modest in price; two table d'hote meals and a bottle of good wine for 72 euros!Thank you very much for this kind message! It was a pleasure to welcome you!Best regards

My wife and I ate here for her birthday. We knew the restaurant for many years in its previous incarnation as La Terrasse and were curious to see what had changed with the new owners............Wow!! What a change!!First impressions - Modern design-led décor with bright colours give a vibrancy to the whole dining experience before you've even sat down - on the really comfortable purple tub chairs! The welcome was business-like and warm. We had booked for 8.30pm and it looked like we were the first - but it appeared that everyone else had too and within 30 minutes there were at least 30 covers seated. We weren't rushed - the menu was different. Not pages of formulaic stuff, but half a dozen choices at each course and beautifully described. We had two glasses of Kir Royale whilst we perused and a were brought a plate of delicious "amuses-bouches". We ordered and the maître d'hôtel (who I believe is the wife of the chef) took time to explain everything. While we waited for our food, we were treated to a small glass of chilled tomato & basil soup topped with a goat's cheese foam.My wife had a chilled mousse of foie gras that had been poached in port with a beetroot compote and fresh almonds. I had a "breakfast" of langoustines, with the shellfish being presented five different ways including a teapot of langoustine consommé which ranks amongst the best thing I have ever tasted. For our second course, my wife had pigeon three ways with a delicious jus and I had lamb three ways, cooked with black garlic and served on a bed of butter beans. The cheese board was presented at the table and the selection was very local with artisanal Pyrenéean cheeses from the whole east-west spectrum and including both sheep, cows and mixed cheeses and also a particularly good blue which was as good as any Stilton or Roquefort.Just when we thought it couldn't get any better, my wife's choice of a beautifully crafted dessert of 80% cocoa was just delicious - enough after the richness of the meal so far. My dessert was a taste sensation - a marriage of sweet ripe Garriguette strawberries with a black olive & basil dressing, served with a strawberry sorbet in a tuille cone topped with a pistachio cream top. Amazing. The wines were what you would expect for a restaurant of this level and I chose a red wine from the Languedoc for €30.Service was excellent - unhurried yet attentive and a brief explanation of each plate was given as the food was placed. Coffee was accompanied by petit-fours - homemade - and were a final flourish to end a wonderful evening. All in €200 for the two of us. Somewhere to go for a special occasion knowing that it will truly be special! We thanked the Maitre d'hôtel and as we were walking to our car parked behind the restaurant, the chef-patron appeared from the service entrance and thanked us personally for coming to the restaurant. A nice touch. We will be back soon.
