This is just the place for an informal light lunch of regional specialities. We had "caillettes" served hot (a sort of cross between paté and a burger) washed down with a bottle of local artisan beer (unpasteurised and allowed to ferment in the bottle). It was utterly delicious and very good value for money. Service was friendly, welcoming and efficient.Don't be put off by the signs welcoming motorcyclists - in France they are a very respectable lot, who appreciate good food. Also, do try the beer. Brewing is a tradition in the hills of the Ardèche.

My husband and I ate here on our travels back in May and I have great memories of this special little place. As it was unseasonably chilly, we ate inside and were charmed by the eccentricity of the layout - the galleried restaurant is wrapped round a rocky outcrop! Service was very friendly and efficient, menu interesting and the food excellent. Recommended, especially as a special treat if staying at the rather good neighbouring campsite!

Have visited this restaurant every visit to Lamastre. The pizzas are excellent with great bases and topping, fantastic flavour and good service. Nice place to eat inside or out, with good parking opposite the restaurant.

If you are in Lamastre then go here for a meal. This is our second visit to Lamastre as we have family near by. We use this more often than any other place to eat. It is not high end food, but it is more than compensated by the great friendliness of the owner and staff and the well cooked food. A 'must go' place if you are in the area.

We'd been on the steam train...also good...and had prebooked here because it's popular and we can see why. We had a table by the geranium decked window overlooking the pool and the train. We had the 19.50 menu local produce and it was lovely, nice Ardeche rosé, lots of chestnut going on. Service good and lovely restaurant.

Lamastre is a small town awash with restaurants, and the three-hour layover of the Mastrou steam train from Tournon St-Jean is perfect for a leisurely lunch. I picked Le Chataignier because I liked the look of it from outside - it didn't look touristy, and it also had a welcoming feel - emphasised when a very friendly lady saw me hesitating and invited me in. I preferred to be indoors for the shade, and to avoid the smokers at the outdoor tables - though sitting looking out onto the market place was quite tempting.A typical mid-range French restaurant at lunchtime - well-filled, bustling, and doing a rapid turnaround of the plats du jour - although a few customers were also dining à la carte. A crique is an Ardéchois speciality, so I thought I should give it a try. It is basically a potato cake with various added herbs and spices, and fried, and you get them served with all manner of accompaniments. It's a little bit inverted - the crique is the lead item, rather than the meat, or whatever, which accompanies it - in my case, a large meat-and-herb meatball. Excellent, friendly service; good wine list - I was delighted to find an excellent, and inexpensive, local red that I'd discovered on a previous trip to the area. Also, my initial hunch was right - this is the sort of place where the locals eat - always a plus point for me. In fact, I may have been the only tourist in the place - certainly the only foreigner. Highly enjoyable three-course lunch and a 50cl bottle of good wine all for â¬28.Merci pour votre commentaireAu plaisir de vous revoir chez nous

I'd never seen "Poleon" on a menu, so just had to try it. It turned out to be a sort of tartiflette with "attitude" - and very good it was too, rich, creamy and piping hot. My companion chose trout which she said was very good and had the verbena flavoured creme brulee - a bit too much verbena for me but she enjoyed it. We'd certainly go back.
