Things to do in Bellegarde sur Valserine

This place wonât blow your mind, but the pizza with lardons and bleu de Gex might blow your belly as itâs very rich and hearty. Lasagna and salad were not memorable. The service is friendly, but there is better pizza to be had in town especially if you are willing to take out.

Off the beaten path a little, but an exceptional meal. The waitress was the nicest lady. We would highly recommend and encourage anyone to stop here. Overall great food, clean, friendly, and quick.

Bellegarde sur Valserine is a sleepy town on the main line between Geneva and Lyon so not many tourists stop here. As a cyclotourist, I always end up in places like this! The Pot a Fu (or Pot au Feu) is worth a side trip!My party of four had duck, fish, veal and chicken and everything was hearty and delicious. We shared a nice rabbit terrine and tried chitterlings for the first time, albeit in a very safe way. We had rillettes made with andouillette (chitterling) sausage. Rillettes is a spread that tastes great on bread. You don't know you're eatin' chitlin's.Our meal was improved by the friendly wife of the chef who managed to bridge the gap in our French with enthusiastic pantomime. She guided us through a complex menu and wine list to a very enjoyable evening.

Typical French bistro with the owner in the kitchen and his lady in the dining room. The result is a wonderful welcome by the charming and fun "patronne" and a great dinner cooked on the grill by "le patron"! Don't miss the delicious squid to start and follow by a incredible steak cooked to perfection. The wine list is small but the quality is exceptional. A very good memory.

La Belle Epoque has the nicest atmosphere in Bellegarde, particularly in the bar area (great place to sit and have a glass of wine or a coffee). The dinner menu is a bit limited but far from bad, the food and service are quite good. This place can get crowded on Friday and Saturday nights, so do reserve!

I ate here twice during my stay in Bellegarde. The food I had was fine the first night and there was some quite good company too and it was well priced. The second night I had violent stomach cramps afterwards and I have thought a lot about it and I can only assume that the mushroom sauce on the pork was not up to scratch: I recovered overnight but was pretty sick for a while. Try it but watch the sauces!!
