But before or after you've experienced the magnificent caves, you can round out your weekend with some wonderful above-ground sights and activities. If the thought of caves conjures up visions of narrow spaces and dark, cold clamminess, the comfortable year-round 56-degree climate, wide-open spaces and magical underworld of naturally created sculptures will amaze and enthrall you. In the summer, you get to see another natural wonder - some one million bats taking to the skies from the cave entrance every evening at sundown. Hardier cave explorers can take a side trip to the wilder Slaughter Cave for a down and dirty ranger-led tour. Come out from under to the zoo at Living Desert State Park for a glimpse of Chihuahuan Desert wildlife - everything from mountain lions, buffalo, bears and coyotes to reptiles, prairie dogs and roadrunners. Head over to the Lake Carlsbad Recreation Area for river swimming and waterskiing or to Guadalupe Mountains National Park for hiking trails with diverse terrain and incredible views.

The staff at this particular Subway location on W. Pierce Street was friendly and aimed to please. The meats, vegetables and bread were all fresh. This Subway will serve you well when you have a hungry bunch to feed. We enjoyed our sandwiches and salads.I don't usually rate many fast-food restaurants, but I wanted to recommend this Subway as a good place in Carlsbad. While visiting Carlsbad, we had some difficulty finding good restaurants that were open when we needed a meal. Many restaurants only served specific meals periodically throughout the day or stopped serving early in the evening.

We needed something quick to eat before heading out to the Bat Flight Program at Carlsbad Caverns, so we pulled in here. Since it is a LJS/A&W combination, everyone was able to find something to eat that suited them. It was clean, the food was served up VERY fast and we were very satisfied.

The computerized system was down and they could not produce a slip... what that meant was I could not give them a tip at the door on delivery.... the gentleman delivering it was gracious and simply told me "one is never necessary, and thank you for the business"{... incredibly good folks.

It took 30 minutes to get 3 shakes, 1 malt and a cheeseburger. Ironically the cheeseburger had no cheese and the malt didn't get mixed so all the malt powder was in the bottom. Terrible!
