Find out what European restaurants to try in Whitby. Whitby is a seaside town, port and civil parish in the Borough of Scarborough and English county of North Yorkshire. It is located within the historic boundaries of the North Riding of Yorkshire. Situated on the east coast of Yorkshire at the mouth of the River Esk, Whitby has an established maritime, mineral and tourist heritage. Its East Cliff is home to the ruins of Whitby Abbey, where Cædmon, the earliest recognised English poet, lived. The fishing port developed during the Middle Ages, supporting important herring and whaling fleets, and was (along with the nearby fishing village of Staithes) where Captain Cook learned seamanship.

Rang beforehand and booked a table for two. On arrival we were seated at a table right next to the door, the till and the wine fridge. In the first 5 minutes we had the door constantly opening and closing which was freezing, someone leaving waved their hair and coat over our table knocking cutlery flying and my husband was asked to move twice so staff could get in the fridge. Asked to move and got a more than frosty response from the lady owner who insisted no tables available despite being half empty. Thankfully the young waitress suggested a table on the balcony could be cleaned for us and we were moved. Ordered a nice red wine but not available nor was our second choice so opted for Prosecco. It was vile!! Very cheap and nasty tasting so we left most of it as it was so acidic it was stomach churning. And then there was the food. Veg calzone crust was so hard I couldnât cut into it. Swapped to a sharp knife and when I did get it open it almost empty and absolutely no taste. Hubbys funghi pizza was burnt black and the same rock hard dough. Worst of all it was all so bland! For an Italian restaurant to serve food with no trace of garlic, basil or even oregano something has gone very wrong. I have given one star as the young girls serving were very nice and were constantly apologising for the owners attitude. Wonât be going back.

Ate here on our first night in Whitby, staff are always warm and welcoming at this bar. We ate upstairs it wasnât noisy or over crowded but had a lovely ambience. On recommendation I had the chicken with sweet potato purée which was delicious and just the right portion size, my husband had the seafood linguini which he also enjoyed. We have wanted to dine here for sometime and it was worth the wait.

We had lunch at Magpie's Café - fish and chips, nicely cooked and served. The staff seemed a bit stressed, looked bored, maybe not enough of them, and our table was a bit cramped. The fish and chips were ok, nothing special, and we felt they were resting on their laurels. Disappointed really.

Lovely food but so slow to deliver ,had drunk our bottle of wine before we got the fourth course ! 3 hours altogether Dear farmeggs, Thank you for taking the time to review us. We would have loved to know what you thought about our food. We're sorry that the tasting menu took too long for you, we do explain when booking that we ask people to arrive between 7pm & 7:30pm and people usually leave 9:45pm - 10pm. Perhaps any of our other services, lunch and dinner, where we serve a la carte would have been more suitable. Kind regards, Bridge Cottage

I know that all Dittoâs reviews are raving but I can only report on what I found on the night. The food just wasnât as good as it was the last time we ate there. I enjoyed my starter of ox cheeks (my OH wasnât overly impressed however) but the belly pork with medallions of pork loin were below par for both of us. The pork loin pieces were dry and the belly pork was a long piece of flabby pork-no lovely crackling to give that knockout texture I associate with this dish (and as we would present it at home!). The desserts were very good-a perfectly made egg custard and my chocolate parfait was also excellent. The cheese board was average. Sadly, this time round, the 5 week wait for a table wasnât worth it. Service was very friendly.
