Sasayama is about an hour drive from Kobe and is well worth the one hour drive both for sightseeing and for lunch. The town is famous for black beans with many well preserved old buildings and sympathetic architecture for newer builds. Lunch is either a la cate or a set lunch for which there are two choices. We selected the first set course which contained entree, soup, main and desert. The other set offered both choices of main but we thought this would be too much for lunch and we were right. We begun with a selection of small dishes for entree including local cured ham with pickles and mustards and pickled vegetables wrapped in thin sliced lotus root. The soup was served in a beautiful large bowl which consisted of hamo, a kind of sea eel of the season, into which was poured a dashi from a cast iron tea pot. There was a choice of two mains; venison and suzuki (sea bass). There were two of us for lunch so we could choose both dishes to share between us. Desert then consisted of three small servings; a charcoal macaroon with ume (plum) cream, small pound style cake and yokan, a jelly black bean paste. On top of this we were served, throughout the meal, some of the best tasting baguette, with olive oil for dipping, I have had outside France.Everything we ate was superb, from the presentation, including the dishes, to the authentic taste of each dish and it's components. This is a memorable meal. The restaurant is part of a Ryokan in an old traditional Japanese house of 130 years old. It was the former home of a local banker - the bank is still in the main street of the town but now part of one of the large banking groups. The Ryokan has preserved much of the original house including the kitchen with it's fireplace, sink and water well. The gardens are traditional and can be viewed from the restaurant and some of the Ryokan's rooms. We were shown a couple of the rooms - both large and charming with Japanese and Western facilities. This is certainly somewhere we would come back to both for the restaurant and next time to stay.Needless to say the service was exquisite. This was certainly worth the drive both for the restaurant and to explore the village and it's castle remains which date back to 1609.Thank you very much for staying with us and for your five star review. As you mentioned, our hotel is well connected to major tourist cities or sightseeing spots while we offers a quieter atmosphere without the crowds. We are very glad that you enjoyed your meal.At our restaurant, we use fresh ingredients produced locally in and around Sasayama. Furthermore, our chef has carefully prepared these ingredients in order to bring out the flavor in each of these ingredients. The restaurant and hotel buildings are renovated the historical architectural structures, and renovations have been kept to a minimum to preserve as much of the original building and past atmosphere. Hope you will have a opportunity to have staying experience next time.We are looking forward to welcoming you back in the near future.
