Reviews on European food in Salen, Dalarna County, Sweden. Home to four major ski resorts (Lindvallen, Högfjället, Tandådalen and Hundfjället), Sälen in western Sweden is a veritable skier's paradise, with over 100 individual pistes in total. Sälen also hosts the start of the annual Vasaloppet, the world’s largest, longest and oldest cross-country ski race.

We stayed at the hotel and had dinner there on one occasion. They have a limited choice on vegetarian main courses, but that is a general problem in Scandinavia as we found. However, the goat cheese with gnocchi and vegetables was very good, as was the rentier filet my husband had. Service was good, the ambiente cozy - no complaints at all. We can definitely recommend coming here for dinner.

Our Swedish friends were looking for a restaurant for a special occasion, and Fagelboet had that reputation. It is housed in a centuries-old wooden building, which gives it a unique and cozy ambiance. Having said that, the cuisine itself was underwhelming. The menu consists of meat fondues, moose, reindeer, beef, that you cook in hot broth at your table. You get a potato side dish with it. Otherwise, there are a few starters, like soup. It did not appear that anyone was swept away by the food. And it's a pricey place. More than $100 for a couple, with one glass of wine each and one starter between them. So, if your priority is not the atmosphere, you might want to consider other options.

A secret hideaway in the mountains - anno 1649 Gammelgården is distinguishable for being a place of tranquillity in a scenic setting both indoors and out. This is where to come to enjoy great food, comfortable accommodation, fresh air and time to just be.
We had fish-eggs on bread with cream spread and onions as appetizer, reindeer steak as main, and cloudberry dessert (with egg-whites?), all very good. The dessert was thicker and tastier than the usual whipped-cream version, although I would have preferred a little less sugar. Cozy atmosphere, lots of knick-knacks to look at, not too noisy. The wine list was very limited and undistinguished--can you imagine, a restaurant with no pinot noir wine?! Long wait for after-dinner drinks in the lounge, but they were good when they finally arrived (some were Irish coffee-type mixtures). Cheerful service.

One of the dishes we ordered was the ribs in terikayi sauce and it was delicious. Serving was big and 4 of us shared out 3 dishes. Even that, we were already very full before we could finish all.The choices of food were quite limited and slightly over-priced, but the staff was very helpful, trying hard to translate the menu in Swedish to English for us.

Gammelgården is open all year round and is a small, old wooden hotel with an excellent restaurant that can be booked by telephone or on line. The restaurant also has a pre- or after dinner comfortable sitting area with wood burning fires. It sits in the middle of wild, rolling hills (called 'fjäll' in Swedish, like 'fell' in English) that come alive in winter with skiers, dog sledders and the like. The restaurant menu is not filled with large numbers of choices but reflects the local flora and fauna (eg arctic char or röding, and reindeer or ren) served with local delicate side dishes. The atmosphere is friendly and old world charming and the heavy wooden walls and ceilings encourage total relaxation. This is not a Michelin star restaurant because its ethos is to help you relax rather than be on your shoulder every second minute with high powered service. We will visit time and again when in the area which means we highly recommend it.

The restaurant family from the west coast of Sweden has now taken root in the center of Dalarna, Sälenfjällen. This time, it is the son of Salesjö who controls the ship, together with a hand-picked team of stars in tableware, kitchen and bar. Come in and
But what superb cocktails they were! Loved the environment it was warm luxurious cosy and welcoming I cant remember the name but the gin and coriander cocktail is their signature and sublime - lovely seating areas and lit by candles after dark! Feels like a special place

Meet Italy in Saelen! Italian food in a traditional way are slow-food when it is best.
A return visit after one year and I was really looking forward to it. The welcome was great but things started to go a bit wrong. First there was no wine list - we could go and review the wines in the racks and make our selection. Second, we were given a spiel about Italian food which we did not need, part of it was on the top of the menu anyway. I could see that other guests were enjoying this attention so put that down to personal taste. The food was very good, the wine was good (but do I know if I could have made a better selection) and the service was up to standard.Thank you för visiting us again and thank you for a nice review and I hope you will be back next time you ar en Sälen.I will try give you an answer on the part you were less happy about and way we do it this way.About the story telling:during all those year I've been trying to give my guests a genuin Italian food experience I've had so many guests that had make something different of the Italian dinner when they were visiting Italy than it is ment to be. And when we explain about the Italian dinner and the different dishes for them, they realize what misstakes they had been doing, and what they could have been done different although they thought they know. So let us give this few minutes to all our gests, even though you know well about this, it make's so many people so happy. I even have had Italian guests that was so glad that we spred the Italian dinner culture and the way to eat there food on and ask me to keep on with this. About the wine list: I think it's a marvelous way to presentat the wine's on and a where living list that changes when new wines is arriving. We also let our gests try and test different wines befor they make their decision, witch not is common with a normal wine list were you only try if the wine is defect or not. I don't really understand what's the different between a written list and a list were you see all the bottles with prices on are when it came to your decision. And when we also give you the opportunity to try different wines before you make your choice it should have been perfect for you when it feels to me that you are enjoying food and wine. Again thank you for your fine review and also thank you for bringing up things you don't like so much so we can try to explain, or change, why we doing things the way we do it. We love when our gests are involved in our food and restaurant so we always can develop and get better and better. With best regards Ulf Grundén owneer of Appetito

The buffet has three stages for each kind of meat (pork, lamb and beef). There are three chefs cutting pieces of meat of your choice and tenderness. The extra courses are excellent and this place is likely to leave you overly fed and significantly poorer. Our waitress had a bad day at her work and gave a very bad impression.
