Ristorante Passatore

What an excellent end to my vacation! My decision to have dinner here on my last evening at Hotel Paradise which is only 5 minutes walk away from Passatore was the best decision ever! The food is simply to die for! Being as the wines at the AI area of the hotel is not what we Europeans are accustomed to, it was an absolute joy and a pleasure to dine at this superb restaurant which I might add, has also an excellent choice of wines. Thank you to each and every one of you and a special thanks to Jose for making me feel welcome.

The restaurant is located inside the Casa Colonial Hotel. The settings, the service and the food puts this restaurant in my opinion in one of the best in the area. We have ordered fois gras, mushroom rissotto, lamb, raviolis and goat dominican style. Everything was great At the end one of our friends got a birthday song and a dessert with a candle.

Our first day and you'd think we would eat anything but Italian, I am glad we didn't. I ordered grilled eggplant with marinara and second guessed because the eggplant was grilled. The eggplant was thinly sliced and caramelized so that it had a roasted taste and texture. If you've ever had roasted anything, you know how it enhances flavors. I also had the calamari appetizer that was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The staff was attentive and helpful answering any questions. There were few because the menu is easy to read with English sub titles. Open air and breezy made for excellent ambiance and I loved it. Great prices were a plus. I didn't order dessert only because I am watching my carbs! One caveat though, if you are not a cat lover don't eat here. It is literally an open door restaurant and the cats lounge under the tables. The place was clean and it didn't bother me that they were there. The staff did run them off after one of our group complained. On the Malecon with a view of the beach out of the windows, nice.

This is a little hard to find. On the main road between Puerto Plata and Cofresi as you head toward Cofresi, after you pass the University, start watching for a sign on the left shaped like a butterfly that says Papillion. Turn there and it is just 50-100 yards up that road on the left. Small, unassuming place. I am not a big meat eater, but I had heard about their ribs so I ordered them. OMG!! DELICIOUS! Meaty ribs with a sweet barbecue sauce, side, salad, friendly owner. I've been there twice and got the ribs again the second time because they were so good! Friends had a hamburger (fair), schnitzel (good). Prices are very good too. I bought dinner for 5 adults, each had at least one cocktail and the bill came to about 3,000-3,500RD (less than $80 for FIVE people!!)
