The name also refers to a historical territory of the Basque Country, heir of the ancient Lordship of Biscay. Its capital city is Bilbao. It is one of the most prosperous and important provinces of Spain as a result of the massive industrialization in the last years of the 19th century and first half of the 20th century. Since the deep deindustrialization of the 1970s, the economy has come to rely more on the services sector.

Never been here before, but I'd heard so much about this that this was a destination restaurant for us. Not open for dinner most of the week this time of year, so we stopped in for lunch.First of all the building is beautiful, and once you step inside you see that it has a terrific view of the valley. We noticed that many (but not all) guests went out on the patio for a pre-prandial drink. Then coming inside for the meal. Many then went back outside for their post-prandial coffee. We were not offered this, so regulars must just know to ask. There were two menus, a six course and an eight course, and we noticed that everything (and more) was also available ala carte. With this in mind we ordered ala carte as there were several things on the menus that didn't interest us.Afterwards we were given a tour of the basement where the wine is stored and they have several rooms for private parties. Very nice decor and ambiance. Wonderful service and a great value as well considering the quality of the food. Not much English spoken.I really like this restaurant because it is simple combinations of expertly cooked food that comes out refined and elegant. Only one dish didn't work for us, but that wasn't because the chef was reaching with some crazy combinations or techniques, just personal preference.Highly Recommended

A la carte restaurant, is traditional basque cuisine and that the average price per person is 60â¬. Minimum two dishes per person.
We were served the most wonderful meal of fresh anchovies, artichokes, foie gras, Basque beef, salt cod.....AND we were a group of 40 people! The artichokes were prepared from fresh.... the bread made there... the homemade vanilla ice cream! Our diet-restricted members were catered for: dairy intolerant, gluten intolerant, onion allergy.... I am tempted to list all of the superlatives I know! Thank you! A must place to dine!

We were totally blown away by the excellence of this little restaurant. Its simplicity in decor adds to the charm and gives no clue as to the magic which we were subsequently served. We'd heard about "the broccoli" and tried it.... fantastic. Every dish was innovative and beautifully presented. No way was this a meal of style over substance - it was total style and unbeatable substance.Thank you again for an unforgettable meal.

First of all, service is excellent. They really take time to make guests feel welcome and to explain the menu. We had the steak tartare, gyoza style dumplings, octopus, and the forest for dessert. Everything was tasty and well prepared. The dessert was absolutely beautiful! Also kudos for being flexible with portion sizing.

Not to be hyperbolic but this was one of the greatest experiences weâve had anywhere. From the personable owners, Natalya and David (who have spent time in the US and speak perfect English-a big plus in Bilbao), to the fine moderately priced wine list, to their fresh locally-sourced food, to Pedro the amicable waiter, to the lively crowd of locals, this restaurant is superb in every way possible. Weâre global travelers and this meal will live in our memories forever.

Went for a quick lunch with my hubby, who is in a conference in this area . The owners do not speak much English, however, the hospitality does not have language barrier . They went to use internet and translate the menu, kind of. We did not mind what we have, the orders turned out to be as nice as we would like it. Very reasonably priced, very friendly . Thank you Thank you for your comment, and valuation our small Basque restaurant will be your home whenever you wish. we always try to make you feel at home despite the different languagesA greeting.

Bar Roma is a meeting place, in the center of the city. They make exquisite âtapasâ and "pintxos". Select wines from the country and very friendly people.
Being ranked No 1 in TripAdvisor can't be easy but after a few minutes, I totally understood why!!Don't be put off by the normal looking outside or unsmiling bar man (which I think was the owner). After a few minutes, he'll be explaining what the many tasty pintxos are & what wines he has, all in a patient & friendly manner. We had 7 amazing savoury pintxos (& we wanted to try so many more!) plus a cheesecake (which was amazing & light but just sweet enough), along with 3 red wines & an alcohol free beer. Imagine our utter amazement when the bill came to 14.80 EUR, I thought he must have calculated something wrong!! But no, that's how good value it is here. We're only in Bilbao for 5 days but I'll definitely be hoping we have time for another visit as the food was so tasty, the wines were so good & the service was spot on.Good morning SuzeyQ. Thank you very much for that wonderful description you make of your experience with us. From the heart, we are pleased to see that our effort bears fruit, and that you enjoy and make such a positive assessment of our products. Thank you for everything and we hope to see you here soon. Good trip and see you soon.

We had an amazing culinary experience. When we arrived we were given a glass of wine and entered a sort of "oasis" where we were presented with some amuse bouches in a picnic basket. Then we were brought into the kitchen where a few more tasty treats were prepared in front of us. After which we went into another area where we had 4 more experiences (spices, sea, flowers etc) with lovely presentation and explanations. Finally we were brought to our table where we had a lovely lunch. There was this white wine we tasted which is made by them and you can only drink it here. It was lovely (and for me it's hard to find a white wine I like) Worth going back just to have another taste! Staff was very friendly and professional and setting relaxing with lovely view. I strongly recommend giving this a try.
